Hey there all. Was doing a cap/rotor today and when I went to put the last clip on (it's always the last step isn't it?) the head of the clip snapped. I can't find any reference to that as an individual part of course but I figured I'd ask you guys, see if you knew. Is it possible to replace just the broken retaining clip somehow or am I in the market for a new distributor?

    Thanks all. :tiphat:

do you have a points distributor or duraspark?
their is an adapter on the duraspark that goes between the body of the distributor and the cap. you can buy these adapters and most auto parts stores. they have the clips on them. i suspect that you could remove the clips from these adapters and put them on a points distributor if thats what you have. i think the clips are just retained with a roll pin.

    It's a '74 with the Duraspark. Oh and it's the 250 I6.

Not sure about the sixes, but the clips on the V8 adapters are not the same length as the ones on the distributor body. You'll need to get those off another distributor, I've never seen them for sale individually.

The clip comes made on the adapter...not the distributor. The adapter screws to the distributor.

Yes, we know. The idea was that a clip could be removed from said adapter and placed on the distributor.

I went and bought a distributor and an adapter and unfortunately as mentioned above the clip on the adapter is shorter than the one on the distributor. It was a good thought, though! Thanks guys, now I gotta find the time to do the distributor swap. :tiphat:

It's just a cantilever style spring clip. Check your local Hardware store or Graingers. Not an autoparts store. Nothing frustrated me more than the number of times I've had an employee at napa/autozone etc tell me a hardware piece can't be purchased seperate then I find it at like Ace.

After that, I would go to the local junk yard and take one off a distributor there.
