I pulled the valve body on my C-4 transmission to put in a shift kit and when I carefully removed the filter, the spring and valve pin that's supposed to be there wasn't there. This is probably why my tranny was acting up. Anyway, I am trying to find these 2 small parts but am having no luck. Does anyone know where I can get them? It is the spring and pin that is held in by the filter. Also, did all C-4's have this spring and pin? -Erick
Used to be you could get the that stuff in a filter kit. Have you tried? From my memory it is supposed to be there. But what do I know, been running a 4 speed for 29 years. Dan
It wasn't in the kit I bought and it isn't shown in any of the kits I've seen online. You would think that it would be easy to get because of all the people using C4's.
When I used to service them, they came in the kits. When I used to service cars, thermostats came with gaskets. Ask the parts counter guy if it is available. Dan hell, I'm gettin old
I put a shift kit in my 4-door this past summer. Neither the shift kit or the filter kit came with a spring. Glad I kept track of mine! If you can't find them new, you may have to get one from a wrecking yard.
Check out your local trans shops, they sometimes have bins of spare used parts. Also scrap yards that have piles of tranny's for scrap aluminum(getting hard to find them though, with the higher price of scrap metals). If you can't come up with one, I have several valve bodies around and can send you the spring and valve for postage only.
Send Me Your Address And I Will Send You One I Have Some Out The Shift Kit I Use You Leave It Out Of The Valve Body
Wow, thanks for your help guys. It sure is great to have a forum like this. I went to the junkyard today and pulled the transmission pan off of a few cars that I thought had C4's. One was a 72 Mercury Bobcat with a C-4. Unfortunately, the Pinto/Bobcat C4's are just a little different and it didn't have the spring and pin. I may need to take you guys up on the offer to mail me one, but first I am going to check this tranny shop out here called Caltrans, which I hear is real good. They are closed till Monday though. I hope they have one. Thanks again everyone. -Erick
I got the spring and pin and put everything back together with the shift kit installed, but the transmission won't work at all. With the car off the ground the wheels will barely start moving in gear and won't move in reverse. It seems to have only P-R-N-D-2 or doesn't go into one of the gear choices. The spring the guy gave me sure seemed like a strong one, which I'm thinking may be keeping fluid from the valve body??? Anyone know how tight of a spring they have or what may be wrong??? -Erick
Erik - not to thread-jack, but did that Bobcat have tailights? If it did, you may want to snag them as they are sought after for taillight conversions.
I remember the first time I changed my tranny filter:confused: Laying under the car.....what the #&(#*%(@) just fell out it fell in my drain pan and I ended up cutting the top off the pan to get it out......needless to say it has not happend since
