Recently I ran across an older post by member Corbin Johnson discussing emblem differences regarding the Maverick:

    http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=84127&highlight=MAVERICK+EMBLEM+DIFFERENCES

and it made me wonder if their were any/many differences to the Mercury or Comet emblems?
I had a few NOS so I got them out, first set of photos is of the Mercury emblem, part number D14Y-62425228-A on the one I have, and the first 4 digits of the engineering number on the emblem are D14B. The Mercury parts manual indicates the part number changed 2 more times on the Mercury emblem during the Comets production, first in 74 to part number D44Y-6242528-A, then again in 75 to D54Y-6242528-A. So it makes me wonder if the emblem changed at all and if so how?
If you have a Mercury emblem, check the back for the engineering number, if you have one with the first 4 digits of D44B or D54B, I would love to see pictures of them.

The second set of photos is of an NOS Comet emblem, part number D14Y-16098-A. Anyone know if they changed at all during the years of the Comets production? Was their any difference in the mounting pin locations on the emblems through the years for both the "Mercury" and "Comet" emblems?... perhaps a change in length? A difference in one for the fender opposed to the one on a C Pillar?
Sorry for the quality of the photos, perhaps I can post better ones later.

Wish I could help, it's an interesting thought. It seemed to me when I had them next to each other my '71 and '74 had slightly different embleming, but I chalked that up to the '74 being a GT. I no longer have the '71 so can't really say for sure. I also have no emblems that are not attached.

Wish I could help more. Also, I really only looked at the emblems on the trunk lid.

I have some Comet emblems. They have numbers cast into them. Hard to read, but one has D14B-16098-A and the other has D34B-6250400-AA. They look the same as far as pin location, design, thickness, etc. The D34B one seems to not be as shallow on the inside as the other one. In other words, D14B would hold more water if it was a bowl. :D

Well for sure the deck lid script changed...the early ones had bigger letter script and the later ones were a more "stylized 70's font" and are thick at the bottom and narrow at the top of the letters to account for the angle back of the deck lid (so the face of the script would sit 'flat' across the top on the angled deck lid). I have some I'll try to get a shot of.
I don't think the actual "Comet" side script changed at all (at least to '76) as far as mounting pins were concerned until '76 at least - unless the C-Pillar year was different. I'll look though some and see.

Thanks paxtond and to all others that have replied. Other than the bigger letters, my 72 script is thicker at the bottom than it is at the top like you described above. I also wonder what year was the Comet script was dropped and not used on the cars anymore and what year the Mercury script may have changed the style of font?... seems the Mercury emblem was used until the end of the production run of 77.

this one is marked D4, it looks like D44B but can't say for sure past D4; it's crusty on the back and the shape is not the most conducive for legibility....
I pulled one off a '73 that was of the earlier 60's style "Mercury" script like in your pictures so my guess would be that the deck lid script was revamped that year ('74) to new groovy proportions to match everyone's excessively wide at the bottom pants with excessively wide at the bottom Mercury script!

I know my '76 still had factory pinned "Comet" side script on the fenders so if they did discontinue the "Comet" side trim it would have been for '77 only.
