Does anyone have pictures of the rear torque boxes on our cars? I'm kinda curious of what they look like and how they are constructed.
I know about the front ones because i have replaced one and i'm working on replacing the other one. I just thought there was something in the back where the rear frame rails attach to the floor.
If you want I can send pictures of mine..........not sure what you call it, but where the front spring eyes attach to the frame..................mine have been boxed.....................the car has been used as a drag car since 79.
Sure, thanks! You still getting those door panels made up? Those would look good in that car of yours.
Here are a couple of pictures I took awhile back, since the rearend is out of the car I'll take some after I put it back in...........since the jack stands are in the reinforced area now. I sent my panels back to Scott so he can make them exactly as they are, along with the back panels. Probably about 3 weeks or so...........I'll post some pictures when I get them.
Here's one removed, upside down, in photo bottom centre is where spring eye attaches, left side is where it ties into rocker and right lower is the cut off end of the rear frame rail where it ties in. The metal with the holes drilled in it is some early repair attempt (not mine) to keep the rail tied to the box and is where the "lip" of the frame rail is welded to the floor / torque box. You can also see the tabs where the rail is factory spot welded to the box.
After looking at that box with tabs and straping welded to it, it looks like maybe "torque" coming from the springs which are attached to the differential, which is turned by a driveshaft connected to a trans... could pull them apart . I might need to find me some weld tabs.
generally only an issue if you're running built big-blocks and/or constantly pulling wheelies. then again.. if you're into welding, have some spare time, and don't mind another couple pounds of steel on your car?.. it couldn't hurt.
