Hi all, I just bought a 72 Comet with a 200ci I-6 engine and factory AC. It runs, I drove it from down the block to my shop. I will get pictures up later this weekend I hope. Very little rust that I have found so far. A line of holes in the trunk behind the right wheel well, but otherwise pretty good. The body looks straight and good, save for some hail damage on the roof and hood. The dash panel is badly cracked, as are the little hotdog-bun sized door arm rests. The headliner is falling in too. Otherwise, the interior is pretty good! The paint is badly faded baby blue, it will need a complete paint job. The chrome trim all around is either missing or damaged, but I really don't care for it anyways - so I will be happy with that omission. I'm not yet a gear head - but I want to be So this is to be a fun project car. For now, I'd like to get it running good, get it road legal and use it about town. I have a 1962 Econoline pickup (not running) that somebody put a 289 in. Eventually I might consider rebuilding that 289 to be put in the Comet, and putting the 200 in the Econoline. Fun stuff. Great forum, thanks for having me! Jon
Welcome from another '72 Comet owner as of today... Been posing as one for several months, waiting on a good title & paper work to be corrected...
Thanks for the welcomes everybody! My Comet looks very similar, but in a much more faded and dented up condition, to FrankTF's. I have to get the title stuff all figured out as well, Krazy. Haven't messed with that stuff before (I hate paperwork). Pics up tomorrow.
Hi again all, I think the first work I need to do is to fix up the interior. I found the great technical how-to section, and am reading through it. I want to -repair my cracked dash pad and recover it with new vinyl -repair (if possible) my fallen in headliner. This looks like a bigger issue, it looks like the liner material, while not torn, has shrunk a lot. It came apart at the seams. I now understand that replacing the headliner involves removing all of the glass, and I don't want to take that step quite yet. Since I doubt the shrunken material can be salvaged, I might just cut it all out and remove the rotten batting stuff (unsure of the correct name for it, yellow cloth that is falling apart like tissue paper). Anything wrong with that? Thanks
