Ok so i got this 76 comet and i was told by the person i got it from that he installed a shift kit and after he got the trans put back together and in the car he, then realized that the kick down cable would not move and that it slips into 3rd gear witch it does sometimes.. so was wondering if its ok to drive with it like that? i have been told as long as i down shift manually it should not do anything to the trans? but would like to get any info on this or maybe a way to fix it?? its a c4 trans and not sure of the kit that was put into it..

Kick down cable is the one from the carb to the down shift lever on the trans, it's only function in a C4, is to engage a lower gear at full throttle(the governor over rides after a certain RPM point)...

Not knowing why the lever is jammed it's difficult to say if it would cause harm... Probably something wasn't aligned properly when the valve body was reinstalled... If it's shifting odd or slipping at times, I'd find out what's wrong before I drove it...

I drove a '69 Ranchero for years with the cable disconnected and there was no issues with trans, just had to manual shift to go back to 2nd if you floored it when the trans was in 3rd...

BTW never try running a AOD with the cable loose, you're asking for a burned up transmission...

I drove a chevy the same way for years and no damage never even down shifted also never hotrodded it (not at these gas prices  ) but as for the slip it's rare but wanted to make sure if anything special was needed because I know jack about ford's... But hoping to learn everything I can :)

it also gives it more line pressure when u activate it, sounds like the valve wasnt positioned right when the valve body was installed

    so we're assuming it's a...C-4 and the cable is a ...rod...(y)

I'll go with this also... "sounds like the valve wasn't positioned right when the valve body was installed."

Yeah you're right, my '72 has a rod... I'm thinking of the '60s stuff that did use a cable(my '67 Falcon 289/C4 & '69 302/C4 Ranchero), about everything else I owned back when had std transmission...

So in order for me to reposition the valve would I have to pull the valve body? And can I do it while the trans is still in the car?

I would at least pull the pan to see if anything looks out of place.
