Hey everybody. I just traded a wrecked Audi Cabriolet for a 1969 Ford Maverick. It will run but the gas tank is severely rusted on the inside. There aren't any holes or anything but it's so rusted that it ruins any gas that goes through it. I am going to attempt to seal the inside of the tank with gas tank liner because I cannot find a gas tank for a 1969 Maverick anywhere! My question is: Will a gas tank for a 1960's mustang be compatible with my 69 Maverick? Any input at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
No, the gas tanks won't fit. They are a one year only tank. I'd like to find a good one also but they are very hard to find. Every once in a while mine gets a pinhole leak. I take some JB Weld stick, clean the tank off and put some on. Last one lasted a year and a half. BTW! Welcome to the madness.
You can use a Mustang tank, but you'd have to cut the trunk floor out and fab a new floor to fit the Mustang tank. I was going to do just that, but decided not to cut up a good rust free trunk floor. I ended up making a drop in fuel cell set up that fastens to the trunk floor the same way as the original tank. That way if anyone ever reproduces an early Maverick tank, I'll still be able to install one.
If you do have leaks, or just want someone else to do the work, there is a company called Renu that will repair and refurbish it. I hear it is expensive, but don't know the price. This page has one forum member's story and a link to the Renu website. They appear to be franchised/licensed or something to that effect. http://smegnl.medina.oh.us/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=57:tank-leak&catid=35:maverick&Itemid=54
from Northeast Pennsylvania I was going to sell my 69.5 tank, since I am using a fuel cell now, but it suffers from a rusty brown staining inside the tank - I'm wondering if there is a chemical that could be used to clean out the stains - I won't sell it to anyone stained like this
If it's not leaking and just rusty inside it's not that difficult to clean it up yourself. There are tons of guides for cleaning out the inside of fuel tanks. Take the tank out, dump bucket of kitty litter in it and shift it around every few hours for a day or 2 to get all the fuel out, then use like ospho or something to treat the rust, treat it with like that POR-15 stuff, and your good to go. Shouldn't take more than a week.
I do not about the TN OSHA laws, but here in Macon Ga I found a shop that would acid/boil out my gas tank. They got the crud out, and I put the liner liquid inside and sloshed it around to seal it. It worked for me. There are some radiator, and machine shops around that still have acid vats.
Thank you guys for the warm welcome and advice. I ended up pressure cleaning the bajeezus out of the inside and am using this stuff called red coat to line the tank. I think I messed up though. You're supposed to drain the excess red coat out and make sure there isn't any puddles of it in there. I thought I had drained it all but it seems I hadn't. It's hard to drain anything out of that tank the way it's shaped. It's been 2 days and I still have wet sealer in there. I guess my plan from here is to rotate it every 8 hours or so and keep it in the sun and hope it all dries. Wish me luck guys!
Red Coat That's encouraging. It is starting to look better in the gas tank. It seems to be hardening. I'm going to leave it in the sun all week just to be sure. Thanks guys. I'll let you know how it all turns out.:bananaman
