    Hi All,

Finally got tired of smelling gas all the time and stepping on the goopy drips on the garage floor from the front of the tank on the 72 Comet. We ordered a new 76 Maverick tank for the 72 Comet, along with the vapor vent valve and grommet.

Haven't taken the old tank out so don't know the condition of the pipe to tank seal. The Mustang and Autokrafters sites all list a part number D1ZZ-9072 for years up to 1973. Nothing for later years. Of course the 74 and up were Pinto based and not REAL Mustangs.

Does this fit the newer (76) gas tank, also? I hear that the filler pipe is smaller in diameter on later models because of the unleaded gas requirement. The Comet is hard enough to fill now with the regular (larger) pipe. I would like to keep the same pipe. Is the hole in the tank the same and the pipe necks down or is there a different seal size entirely for the later models?

Tank is still on the truck from Rock Auto . I would order the seal now so we will have all the parts when it arrives but want to make sure it is the right one. No mention of this as I can recall on the various articles on tank swapping.

The tank part number F30 on the Rock Auto site shows many applications, including Granadas and other cars. I could do a cross reference check for parts but somebody here must know.

    Thanks,

    John and Mikey, Comet jockeys

i just happen to have one handy, but it doesnt have the part number

it just says foMoco 98 on it.

Maybe someone has an early seal and can measure it up.

the measurements on this one are

    2 3/4" OD 1 1/8" ID

    and

    3" OD 2 1/2" lip to 1 1/8" ID

Thanks for all the help, guys. but my question still is, "Does the old filler pipe fit the later tank?"

I will check with the local ford dealer. I should have ordered this seal (and the one for the floor) when I bought the other parts. For these small items the shipping is a killer. Maybe I'll just combine the order with a crate V8 to replace the six if I have to buy something from the stealer anyway!

    vapor vent valve and grommet.

Where did you get the vapor vent valve and grommet? I bought a tank from RockAuto but they did not show the grommet. I need the grommet to put the tank in. Does it have a part number? The local Ford dealership here in Houston says that they don't have a part number listed for the grommet.

Thats what I purchased on my 1974 Comet, F-30 an new straps to boot.I ordered the same filler neck seal on ebay. Larger fuel tank means a longer ride between stops.

    The part #is E1AZ-9072B for the maverick-comet after 1975. It was $16.95.

You do realize that post was three years ago right? I don't think he was trying to sell it any ways, just put it up for reference.
