I'm sort of a noob at this labor of love thing. Oh, I've had them in the past they have just been dismal failures. My first maverick, a 76 went to the junkyard because of a dead tranny. Young and poor. Oh well. My latest is a 69.5. I had a 70, 8.8" out of a mustang put in. 4 bolt to 5. They didn't align the rear end properly and bent the u-bolts. Was thinking of trying to put the rear end under the springs. Any thoughts. Anyone? Please!
70 stangs didnt have 8.8" diffs They had 8" or 9" rear ends...They are a bit wider than a Mav 8" As for mounting under the springs...First...Why? Second... You will have to move the spring perches to do so and shim it so the pinion angle is correct. Back to the first ...Why...
First, the springs won't line up quite right. Second, trying to get a little more lift out of the back end. Even with shackles on the bottom hole, can't get the body much off the wheels. Feel free to speak your mind. Thanks.
Are you still on the old leaf springs??? If so, get new springs it will solve a world of problems. Dont use long multi holed shackles...They are a crutch for worn out springs and make the rear of your car more unstable than it is with (just worn out springs) They will also make your cars front end want to push through corners. (Not a good feeling) Soo...Either someone put an 8.8 out of a fox stang in it or, we just arent seeing the same thing here...Does the diff have a bolt on rear cover???
Ill have to get back to you for sure later, but I don't think so. Yes, they are the old leaf springs, but there are only 16,000 original miles
You have to think 16,000 original miles yes but 43 years of weight sitting on them will make them weak.
Craig Selvey said get new springs. What kind do I get? Maverick or Mustang? Will mustang springs line up, or do I get maverick springs? Which the current ones don't line up quite right with the rear end. They bent The snot out of the u-bolts putting it in. I may be able to to move the rear end about an inch to better center it. Oddly, with all the things to worry about, I didn't expect this.
Also, I'm running 235/16s on the rear. I need the lift. Found a post about general springs. Any experience with them?
I have there springs, they are a great fit and will solve your problem of tire clearance... Buy the rear shackle kit they offer and get rid of the one's your using now... I've had mine on the car a little over a year now and need to put a 1" lowering block in because the car still sits a little high with my 255/60/15 tires...
Had to go sit in time out for swearing at work. Ill try and take some good pictures and post them tonight. Thank you all.
So, I couldn't get any good pictures. However, no bolt on the rear end, just two dimples. And I think I will just take the advice and get new springs and just put them in slowly and to my satisfaction. With some new shocks it should sit nicely. Coming soon to a post near you, engine questions and how to make a Falcon Six go faster.
