I noticed today that Im leaking quite a bit of oil from the dipstick tube. Not where it goes into the block, from the top. My pcv valve rattles so I assume its ok. Any thoughts on the cause. :hmmm:

Check PVC valve, stick a business card on the bottom of it while the engine is running, and see if it sticks. If it doesn't then you need a new one.

My first guess, has it popped loose?

I'll try that Dave. It seems to have go vacuum on it. I was tinkering with it last week. It rattles at idle and it bugs me.

oh ok. its stock. you may be getting too much blow by. i would do a leak down test to see how well the rings are sealing.
you may want to change the pcv valve just because they are cheap

I had the same problem with a new 180* valve. I grabbed a 90* valve at the junkyard from a 6 cyl Maverick and it solved my problem. With the new valve I could hear it buzzing when it was sucking. After cleaning the JY valve in gasoline and compressed air, I don't hear it buzzing. The new valve was more of a serious vacuum leak instead of a controlled vacuum leak. This might not be your problem but this fixed my problem.

I had that issue on my Comet... It's vac is pulled from #7 intake runner, caused a dead miss at idle... With a new 6cyl valve it's mostly OK but I plan on adding a spacer to pull vac from the bottom of the carb... Currently has the goofy spacer that mounts EGR valve, soon will be history...

All good advice. Thank you very much. Im new to doing diagnostics with guages and just bought a vacuum guage. While it was hooked up the needle was not steady. It fluxuated about a half inch at most. I dismissed it as normal since I never used a guage before. I do have a very very minor miss, my engine shakes a tiny bit at idle. My number 3 plug was black when the rest were fine. I just watched a video on how to do a leak down test. All that being said, before I even do the leak down test, Im going to say I have a problem with the rings on number 3 cylinder. This engine has several rebuilds on it already and I have a 250 to rebuild and drop in. I will confirm my diagnosis when I get a leakdown testser, ordering one from Amazon. Now my question is, should I chance driving it to Carlisle and Austin with this condition? Im pretty sure its been like this for quite some time. I reckon I need to do the test first and determine the sevrity of the problem.

Heck yeah! I know me, I was gonna drive it anyway! I think I have plenty of time to rebuild the 250 in time for Austin. (y)
