Does anyone know, if the Falcon six performance handbook would apply to rebuilding a 300ci? There are hp and torque advantages over the 200, without too much weight change. No, I don't want a 5.0. I bought one and want to get rid of it. I'm after the straight six performance. I'm familiar with Clifford and inline six. Any tips on what to do first would be appreciated. Ie. spark, carb, exhaust etc. thanks
I would start with ignition and fuel systems. Make sure that is working and where you want it and the size the exhaust accordingly.
Thanks. Sort of new at this modding thing. Are you talking, like an msd or accel, ignition, or distributor or all of the above. I only want to do this once. I hear the duraspark II is good. Is there something that replaces the spark box?
what all are you doing to the bottom end? then head from there...then exhaust...then carb and intake...JM2C
Well If the block is good and the head is good and you just want a little more pep right now I say find a decent carb, distributor, and exhaust. But since you want to do internals later, you need to plan accordingly before you invest money in other parts. Make sure you know what CFM and other things. Just something to think about
plan, plan, and plan some more. Look at what you need to do to the bottom end and cylinder head. Once you decide on that, I say plan all the externals appropriately. Check out classic inlines and the ford six forum. They should be able to help and provide you with parts
Have you given considerations for exhaust header, motor mounts, oil pan, radiator & fan mounting, hood clearance etc??? There is a reason these engines were never factory in a unibody vehicle(basically it's squeeze to fit)...
A very long engine compared to most V8... Found on net... 300 DIMENSIONS (1971 year): FAN-to-CRANK-FLANGE: 931 mm / 36.65" HT OIL-PAN-to-TOP-OF BREATHER-CAP: 690 mm / 27.17" 490lbs Couldn't find a width but it's narrower than any V8... By comparison, a 302 is 27.5" long, 20.25" tall(no carb), 18.75" wide(no exhaust) and weighs 470Lbs... Weights are for all cast engine with exhaust manifolds, headers and aluminum intake will cut weight... It's fairly easy to knock a 302 down to around 400lb with alu heads as well, that's approx same as a 250...
I sent you an article on the other thread I started last year, hopefully you can get some information from that as it showed some pictures of the 300ci in a 71 Maverick. Also, take a look and join Fordsix.com, that site has a lot of information on the Ford six. In my mind the 300ci Six is much better than the 302ci V8, the six has a 4" bore and 3.96 stroke...........the 302 has a 4" bore but only a 3" stroke. As with the 302, the 300's problem is in the head...............it's just not made for HP, but even stock the I believe the 300ci six has one big advantage over the 302 V8.........torque..........much more torque and broader torque range....................and as us racers say..........torque makes HP......................not the other way around! If you can put a good head on a 300 you can match almost any HP that the 302 can make, and the block on the 300 has 7 main bearings........... So, it just depends on how much HP you want to make and how much money you are willing to spend. I don't think 300hp it out of reason, but you will probably spend most of your resources on the head and pistons. But if you just want to shoehorn it into the Maverick I'd start out with headers/good ignition system/intake and carb...........................IMHO
Almost forgot...................here is an interesting article on the Ford six; http://www.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/engine/5283_building_six_cylinder_engine/
