I figured out the switch and took it out. I had to replace the spring in there, and the way the dimmer wheel sits is a bad design, but it's better now. Still no power though.
Attached is a wiring harness for the '71. Should be about the same for yours. I dont know how well you can read it. I would move to the next items in the process. Hook the fusebox back up. Then look and see if you have power at the ignition switch.
I have a bigger diagram for a '72 already. Now, I should be getting power TO the yellow wire on the smaller square plug end of the ignition with right? the end without the rod.
You are making this harder than it should be... The yellow wire from the solenoid is voltage supply and feeds power to the ign sw, light sw etc... If none of these have power and the firewall connector is OK, problem is somewhere along that yellow wire... It connects to a fuse link at the solenoid, is that link good?
right that's why I asked to be sure that I am testing the ignition switch right. all fusible links in the engine bay are good. the focus is inside now.
Hairy You have been working way to long . You need to go back to the basic . Start at your power source ( battery ) then solenoid and work your way into the car ignition switch. You need to trace the yellow wire / fuse link with a test light to see where the wire is broken.
mavdog, I just did and it looks like I'm not getting power at the yellow wire going to the switch. I tested it at the plug.
Just a thought here, Did you test the fuse links electrically, or just visually? Use a test light and probe the wire right after the fuse link. I'll bet they're bad, but look Ok!
Well in the engine bay, visually and then tested all the ones I replaced. But, I don't see any more fusible links under the dash. You're in bunnel? you're like 15-20 minutes away from me!
Cool! You're one of the few that has even heard of Bunnell! I'd be glad to come over and look at your car this weekend! Send me a pm and we'll work something out!
you need to fix the flashers too and check to see if you have power to the box if you do check to see if you have power coming out.it sounds like you have a bad connection.use a volt ditgal volt meter. in the pic it looks like the fuse is blown also make sure you have the right amp.if it blows then you have a short
what about the flashers now? and where specifically do you want me to check? because like I said I get power at the yellow wire at the plug, but when it's bolted together I get nothing at the fuse box and nothing even going to the ignition switch. also if you're still on the front page all that has been taken care of.
HOW? it's bolted together. I even had someone push on the engine side while i pushed the other end on the inside with the headlight switch on to make sure it was making a connection and nothing happened.
the pins in the connectors that join the fuse block to the harness in the engine compartment can be pushed out of the connector. you should be using a test light to verify voltage present at the fuse block. if the yellow wire lights up a test light at connector that goes to the the fuse block but doesnt light up on any of the fuses when connected then you need to be looking at the pins in the connector and at the back of the fuse block. also you can take the back of the fuse block and look at all the connections in the fuse block for corrosion or broken connections.
