what made you buy your comet or maverick?

71 Comet GT (clone)

I wanted a copy of the first new car I ever bought. When I was in the Air Force I bought a 71 Comet GT, 302, 3 spd with air.

Five years ago I saw a regular Comet, 302 auto, for sale in northern MI. It was a little rough with Maverick parts on the front end but the rest of the car was solid. It was an Arizona car and I decided I had to have it. My brother restores car as a hobby and I called him and said I had a project for him.

After restoring it for four years it's almost completely restored (except the seats) and I'm loving every minute I drive it. I feel 40 years younger and enjoy the heck out of it. It is my new passion in life.

 

was looking for a drag car roller,wanted a fox body,but could not find one at a decent price.found a 1970 maverick that was tubbed,caged,big rear and had shock towers cut for 351 windsor.did some research and found out that mavericks are just as competitive as foxs,and they are lighter.in the late 70s and 80s these cars were punished badly with weight added to them because they were to competitive.with the small blk combo,4spd i plan to run,this car will only be about 2400lbs and i weigh 200.with about 550 horse on tap,this should be a pretty fast car,hope ihra tech doesnt mess with me toooooooo much!i love this car,it is driver and mechanic friendly,should be a blast to drive.

Shopping for another replacement project (already have a '62 Ford unibody short bed and a '61 Pro Srtreet Falcon project and a '66 F100 short bed daily driver) since we retired from racing this past fall. Looking for a smaller car that could hold a V8. Mostly looked at Chevy II (haven't owned a Chevy anything for many, many years), a '64 Fairlane, '64 or '65 Comet or a Maverick. Spent a couple months driving all over the midwest (just retired last December so time is available) looking for rust free.

Found the Maverick and it was perfect for a 1970 Pro Stock clone/tribute style car. Little car, big engine, fun to drive.

Was looking for a drag car roller online,wanted a fox body or early Falcon.Watched my car for a while until the price was right,did a little research and found out a Maverick is lighter than the other 2.I watched Ricky Smith run his Country Shindig Maverick back in either the late 70s or early 80s and always liked it.He won the championship 2 yrs in a row in his class before he switched over to Pro Stock.The wheel base on it is only about 2in longer than a fox and w/ a 351w in it these can be very fast cars.

 

The first car I bought was a 1971 Comet GT, after graduating from HS. Had it until a year after I got married which was two years later. Regretted if ever since. After retiring I found a 1973 Comet GT. Wanted something as a project to fill my spare time with ...HAHAHA!!! Love driving it and taking it to shows and explaining to the spectators exactly what a Comet GT is. Most of the interest came from people that said to me "I haven't seen one of these for over 30 yrs!!" When I look at them they look awfully old! Makes me feel even older!

 

I had wrecked my 65 Econoline pickup and needed a replacement when I was in high school. I saved my money all summer my sophomore year working construction and I found a 72 Comet in the Autotrader. My dad talked me into going to look at it and he helped make up the difference since I was a little short provided I pay him back. It was an awesome car, 72 LDO 302 auto, floor shift 2 dr. I loved that car...

I had never planned on owning a Comet. But now that I own one........
I had a 61 Tbird that I had spent a lot of time bringing back to life. The car had a lot of sentiment. After 8 years I was looking for something different. With little success, I rubbed off the notion of a "new" ride. Finally, a retired gentleman came to look at my rust bucket and inquired about a trade for this 73 Comet.
After talking for a while, I decided to have a look. I was very impressed with the body work done to this former California car. Yet, I was reluctant due to my Tbird attachment. In the end, I went ahead with the swap only because I knew the new owner of my old ride was going to finish it.
Now that I've had the Comet a few months, I am extremely happy. I get way more heads turning. Plus the Comet is waaayyy faster!

The girl next door bought a new '72 Grabber. It was Grabber green. I was 15 years old and since I liked her car she let me wash it once a week. When I got my driver license the following year she let me drive it to the car wash. I would pretend the car was mine.

When I turned 17 I ordered my own '74 Maverick Grabber. Red/black 302, buckets, floor shift, am/fm disc brakes, power steering. $3100 A plan.

I had two Grabbers to take care of until (Karen) traded hers in for a '75 Mercury Cougar XR7. Needless to say her Maverick was in excellent shape!

 

My dad always talked about Mavericks. He really liked them: how they looked, the body. I never knew about them until one day he pointed one out to me. He said: "Look, there's a Maverick!" It was love at first sight! So, for me, a Comet is just like a Maverick. I like both of them!

 

I talked the guy down from $3k to $1k. Couldn't resist. Besides, I'd been wanting one again since I sold my 73.
