My car is a 1977 Comet. The turn signals light but won't blink. I have swapped out the flasher unit and it works fine in another vehicle, and I have a new turn signal cam, which I have made sure is tightly fastened. All of the other electrical systems are working. The car does have a lot of rust in the back half. I am also not getting any response out of the hazard flashers. I'm 18 and this is my first car, which I am trying to restore. I deeply appreciate any help you guys with experience can give me.
Your bulbs could be bad. So how much rust is "a lot"? It could be the rust has compromised the integrity of the wiring. Pictures would help.
N8D, post a bit more info. The lights stay on when you indicate a left or right turn. Or, they turn on when pull the headlight switch but don't do anything when you indicate a left or right turn (with headlights off)? The flashers and turn signals run on different flasher units. With rust a bad ground comes to mind. Also, is your battery fully charged? Describe as much as possible and post pics if you can (Craig's idea).
I checked the bulbs and they're good. When I indicate a right turn all the right hand lights meant for signaling get brighter while all the left hand signal lights turn off. When I signal for a left turn all the left hand lights meant for signaling get brighter and nothing changes with the right hand lights from normal. When I turn on the caution flasher switch nothing changes. I do not get any life out of the lights unless either the parking lights or headlights are on. After further inspection I haven't found any places where the where is missing it's insulation and contacting metal. the ground wires don't appear rusted very much at their contact and I have examined the wires all the way from the dashboard to the front of the rear fender, as well as all of the wire in the trunk. I have not been able to examine the wire slightly forward and over the rear left fender. It appears that one of the car's prior owners did some wire splicing. The rust is mostly on the frame now, and after examination I haven't found anywhere that it's even in close proximity with the wiring. The trunk floor used to be rusted out but I cut and ground away the rust and replaced the floor pan with fiberglass and resin.
