I know this has been asked before, but I am new to this forum. I found a auto trans out of a 95 Mustang Gt, what would it take to put it in my 72 Mav?
A 164 tooth 28 oz flexplate, a custom cross member and shifter... After all that work it still ain't gonna shift, as '94 & '95 Stang AODE trans are computer controlled... You'll need a stand alone controller as well...
Thanks for info, I am just going to find a C4 auto. The car was originally a 3 speed, column shift. I want to replace the manual 3 speed with the c4 and make it a floor shift. My dad bought this car new in 72 , he gave to me to restore for my son. It is all original at this point and still runs strong, but always wanted the floor shift and now since the column shift broke I am going for it. Once again thanks for response!
You can use a AOD, those were in all the 5.0 Fox chassis vehicles from '84 or so up to the '93 Stang... Also includes T-Bird/Cougar early '80s through the '93 MN-12(I used a 3.8 Super Coupe AOD in my '88 5.0 Bird for nine years and put around 700 drag strip passes on it)... The LSC lincolns from '88-'92 also have a good AOD but it's approx 1" longer than the units used in the other passenger cars(as are pickup/van units)... The full size Crown Vic, Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town car all used AODs with the 5.0 engine... There are literally millions out there... The best ones are from '88 up when some improvements were made to the lubrication system, but I've never had a issue with the older ones in stock applications...
Why not just put a floor shifter on the 3 speed ? That would be boat loads more fun for a teenager than an automatic. If your 3 speed doesn;t have the floor shifter tailhousing, you should be able to locate one fairly easy and swap the tailhousing, then buy a shifter and install kit (Hurst) Something you'll have to buy anyway in doing a floor shift C-4, but a whole lot less effort.
Thanks, that is a great ideal. How would I go about finding a tailhousing, my 3 speed was a factory column shift. It is all still original, I have a floor shift column and a 3 speed shifter out of a 65-66 mustang. Would any ford 3 speed tailhousing for a floor shift work with my column shift trans?, if so what part number should I look for. I know I sound like a idiot but this ideal had never crossed my mind, it would be so much simpler to do this. Once again thanks for the great info and ideal!!!
Is your tailhousing bare, or does it have drilled and tapped bolt bosses on it ? If it's drilled and tapped, all you need to do is bolt up the shifter and cut the hole out of the floor panel. Any 3 speed tailhousing that's drilled and tapped should work as long its from a car. (the trucks had a short tail)
No mine is bare no holes, I have found some on ebay for around $75 - $125 which I thought was a little high, but that seems to be the going rate. What do the numbers stand for at the end, such as "Ford Manual 3 Speed Extension Tail Shaft Output Housing 3.03 - Used" and "65-66 Mustang Tail Shaft 2.77 Baby 3 Speed - Used". I don't want to spend that much on something I cant use. Thanks
I'm thinking yours is the 3.03, but I'm not certain. Try calling this guy: David Kee, he owns www.4speedtoploaders.com he's located in San Antonio. Really nice guy to do business with. Give him a call and he might possibly have what you need wihout having to guess on anything. He knows Ford manual transmissions inside and out.
Trans help Could anybody tell me if this is a C4 trans (1968 FORD MUSTANG 3 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION) Original stock 1968 Ford Mustang 3 speed automatic transmission. Excellent condition. In a crate and ready for pick up.
Yep that's a C-4 or a C-5. The C5 had a deeper bell housing to make room for the lockup torque converter.
I can not find a 3 speed tail housing for a floor shift for my 72 Maverick. It has the v8 302 and had a 3 speed column shift. All the kits I have purchased put the shifter on the far let side of the trans tunnel. For some reason my tail housing has a different mounting bolt pattern for the crossmember, it has two holes about 4 inches apart that run vertical to the housing, all the tail housings I have found for the floor shift trans have a 3 inch pattern that runs horizontal for mount to the crossmember. I have a factory shifter that I was going to bolt in.
