So what kind of Mufflers is everyone running? I currently have 3" pipe from the headers to Flowmaster 40 series. I like the way it sounds but it is a bit loud for the street. I just ordered up some Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers. I was just curious if anyone is using them. I liked the way Dynomax sounded on some of my buddies' car. But I don't know that I've ever heard them on anything with a 289 or 302. They should be delivered in a few days.... I need to clean up the header flanges (may be looking at grinding, then weld build up, then grinding to level out) they are leaking so now is a great time to fix it. Hopefully I'll have it all done by Christmas...

Turbos sound good on our cars too.
It will seem very quiet in the car after the swap though.
I used to keep a pair of flows and a pair of turbos and swap them from time to time. The flows sound great, but the noise can get old.

Thanks...I don't mind it inside...it's the fact that everytime one of my State Trooper/ Sheriff Officer friends hear it they let me know it's a $300 ticket if I get stopped for it. That and the neighbors aren't real big fans of it...figure I'll quite it down a little

I had a pair of Dynomax super turbos on the '74 before I sold it. Nice sound, not too loud, not too quiet. Then again, the motor was a stocker with only headers and an X pipe.

Brother is working on a little hotter engine as we speak. I bet it sounds a little different.

It will still be plenty strong sounding outside.
Turbos just don't have the interior resonance of flows.
    Different sound frequency...

On my 73 Comet I have Ravin Performance mufflers (Midas brand). On my 74 Comet I have Midas turbo mufflers. Has a nice rumble to it, not as loud as the 73 Comet. Lets people know it's a 302......

    3'' is loud on anything.
As for the dynomax's... I think they are overrated for the price, but they sound good.
As for mufflers...... whats mufflers? My car has open headers for now.
Going to throw a set of 2 1/4 glass packs i have laying around on it just enough to breka in the motor, etc so the neighbors wont complain

Thanks! That's what I was hoping to hear. I'm looking for a little rumble at idle but don't want to loose the 3" pipe. I'm sure at WOT it'll still be screaming! And by then I'm usually only worried about getting pulled over, not how loud the exhaust is. And from what I've seen it should still flow pretty good at the track

My 302 was fairly radical when I was running turbos on it...
They sound plenty racy with a healthy cam.

    A note on pipe size:
Smaller pipes are actually louder because the exhaust velocity is higher.
Larger pipe slow velocity, so volume is not as high. The problem is resonance... 3" pipes give massive bass undertones that rattle windows and body panels.
3" turbos will have deep resonance too, but nothing like flows.
Put an 'H' pipe on there to quiet it some too... It also adds a wee bit of mid-range power too.

    Thanks Dave,

Sounds like you know a think or two about fluid flow and sound waves. The 'H' pipe is on my list of things to do. It seems I can always find another project to work on.

I'm running Hooker headers with 3" collectors. 3" pipe inlet to Dr. Gas X pipe with 2 1/2" outlet to Flow masters (series 40) and then out the back. They sound off pretty good when your on it, but its not to bad when your cruising. Although mine does have a real annoying sound at 50 MPH. Cruising above 50 MPH is O.K. I would'nt recommend for daily driver.

I'm running the 40 series flows on my setup, 2 1/2" with an x-pipe, I like the sound of em and so does everyone that hears em...except the cops in town,,, I do my best to keep it down around town... but one night I got behind an elderly couple doin 25 in a 45 in the fast lane so I eased over in the right lane and accelerated to 45 maybe a little qwik...the cop was sittin across the street and heard the car...now he didn't pull me over...he waited for me to get to the video store and pulled up along side and asked me if he could talk to me...after complimenting the car he just asked me to hold it down around town. I like to cruise around town so it might be time for some 50 series or some Dyno's for me too.

Yeah that sounds like the situation I'm in. Mine's pretty loud and when you've got a 23 year old guy in a Canary Yellow car with illegal window tint, roll cage and a tag that reads WANA TRY the last thing I need to do is attract attention with my exhaust.

    Hey Riporter,
What kind of shape is your 66 T-Bird in?

289 Mav. Were you cruising through Apopka (HWY 441) the other day? I passed a Canary yellow Maverick with black stripes on the hood. I thought someone had stolen my car. I almost turned around and gave chase.

Mine's been in the garage for a while. If it was mine, I wish you had given chase. Mine has a Cowl hood and no black. It should be back on the road after the 1st of the year.
