I have a 70 mav that I have come up with a crazy idea. Thinking about putting a cummins 4BT in it and making a fun toy. I have parts for a 4bt all over so???? why not lol. It will be a long build but I will try to get pics up when i can.
i just hope it will not be a rollerskate on ice... hope the motor will fall far enough back to put some weight on the rear end. it should fit if the numbers all add up.
My theory has always been "anything will fit in anything" if you have the time, skills and/or money. Take a look at my build thread, by clicking on the link below, on my own 70 and you might want to think about doing something like I did to get all of the room that you can get out of your engine bay. Just to begin with--- My Insane 1969.5 Street Project Thread
thanks fellas my only fear of it fitting will be the depth and motor position over the front end. OOOO and were to put the turbos because i have a buddy offering to give me his stock 60mm and make the tubing for the twins.
My only concern would be the weight of the engine. I've seen those swapped into all sorts of stuff, even saw a late 70's El Camino with one in it a while back.
and another thing we are going to build it like a bird (cheep cheep) so the parts car will be striped and sold for cash for the little things i need like everything in front of the radiator and parts to keep it from hitting the ground lol
Another option may be the 5 cylinder OM617 Mercedes diesel. They came in a bunch of 70's and 80's Mercedes, very common and cheap, at least around here.
One of the problems, that i had to overcome putting my 351 Cleveland in my 70 Maverick, had to do with engine location using a Mustang II type conversion. It was semi solved using an available notched out Canton oil pan with a rear sump that was originally designed to work with a Fox body Mustang. The engine still sits an inch or so too high and an inch or so too far forward compared with the stock position of a 302 V8. I say this because I, at least, had something available to me to work with. As I'm sure you already know, you will not have anything like this to help you out so you may have to modify your oil pan/pickup to simply rest the engine low enough in the bay regardless if you go with the Mustang II system or the stock suspension. On the stock suspension, you do not have a steel crossmember to deal with but you still have rear steer tie rods and center link that you will have to overcome. I look forward to seeing pictures if you decide to go ahead with your project.
yea i have a couple old oil pans for a 4bt and that should not be a prob. yea i going to stick with the 4bt because i have all the parts and a couple cummins mec. that are willing to build it to do what ever i want.
As you said, the only concern I think you'd have it getting it low enough in the chassis..............................but to paraphrase Mav1970, " You've got my attention. Also, here is a site if you haven't already found it; http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/forum.php
yea thanks fellas i have the odd feeling it will not have a hood till i can figure out how to make it fit??? lol it going to be fun. we just starting the axel swap and front end swap from my 76. the 76 has a 250 didnt they put the same springs in it as the 302 cars??
