fuel gauge goes above full and wont come down

    1973 comet, 1977 4 door mav(dead), 1964 falcon 4 door wagon, 1936 studebaker dictator
    so my 77's fuel gauge goes way above full and only comes down when the key is off so i figured i would ask you guys for some direction before i start playing with it. thanks

    Sounds like the instrument cluster voltage regulator has gone bad.

    If the wire going to the fuel sender has a bare spot and is rubbing on metal, it will send fuel gage to the full mark.

    I would have to agree on this one. Seems like the two wires are touching each other or the body of the car.

    mine did the same thing when I first bought my 76 mav, and after tracing the wires from trunk up the ground was shot.
