Hello, I am new to this forum and new to Mavericks. Picked up a 1970 2 door for my son and I to restore nearly perfect sheet metal but mechanically OMG.

A couple of questions, the car came with a slanted power brake unit and new pedal assembly (found in the trunk) that appears to fit. My major question deals with upgrading to disk brakes in the front. Any good conversion kits or recommendations?

Second question, car has now power steering. Looking for any recommendations on adding that either aftermarket or parts from factory PS.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

The car is a 250 six with air conditioning. Now worried we got in over our heads!

    Thanks

    welcome to the site,
where in so cal are you?
you can find used stock disk brakes from newer mavericks, 60s-73 mustangs, granadas ect.
their are companies that sell stock disk brake conversions that are all new parts.
you can get aftermarket performance disk brakes from companies like willwood for really high performance braking
you can by adaptors that will let you put late 90s mustang gt or cobra disk brakes on the front and the rear.

for the power steering, you could find a good used set up in the classifieds on this site. the stock power steering for these cars has a lousy feel to it. its really mushy and prone to leaks.
you can get a borgenson power steering conversion that replaces the steering box with a power steering box. these work really well and feel like modern power steering. there are a couple of companies that make rack and pinon conversions that will fit the maverick.

The Borgeson unit is really nice but a little pricey, bad part is it will only work with automatic floor shift vehicles... I suppose it could be used with a cable clutch setup but definitely not OEM clutch linkage... I checked out the possibility of adding one to my big block Fairlane but with 4 speed wasn't gonna happen...

I believe there are disc brake kits that allow usage of the orig spindles, but if you go with something OEM you'll need to swap them out...

Thanks for the quick responses. The car is an automatic on the tree but I think with a different column we could convert to a auto on the floor and then use the power steering kit. What are thoughts on that and any suggestions as to where I could find a used steering column?

you dont need to change the steering column. just need a floor shifter, either stock or after market.

It is my understanding "the column needs to be slightly modified - shortned" to make the transition to the Borgensen convert.

Brake information and a rear end question

Here is what I have learned thus far. My 70 maverick can be converted to disk brakes in front but requires a 630 spindle and will end up 5 bolt. The rear end is a different story. I can have 5 bolt axels made no problem however it must be an 8 inch not 7.25 rear end. Is there a way I can tell the difference between these rear ends prior to unbolting it? My 70 is a 250 six version with 4 bolt axels. I understand that it is a crap shoot what ford hung on the rear.
