Looking to start my 347 Stroker and was looking for a good engine builder. I have a guy that is local but seems to be either very busy or slow. He is telling me that it will be 4 to 6 months even if I could pay the full amount up front. He has a decent reputation for his quality but he also has a reputation for taking forever.

I was wondering if there is a company out there that someone would recommend. I have looked on the internet and there are a few places that look good but I don't know what their reputation and quality is like.

    Thanks for your help.

    Tom

There are many shops out there that can do great work.. but are you sure that you want to deal with the extra hundreds of $$$ worth of shipping expenses?

I'd maybe consider spreading your wings with road trips to larger metro areas to get er' done. Gas ain't cheap either.. but in my book, being able to eyeball parts and deal with issues in person(and they do arise) is worth something too.

I have just dealt with waiting so much I am getting tired of it. The cars was supposed to be a gift 2 years ago and it is still stuck in paint. I was hoping the car could be done by June but I highly doubt that with the estimated engine build time.

I need to go down and get a finalized build sheet so I can get a final quote on the engine. I want a turn key motor and with what I want it will not be cheap. I understand the convenience of being local but I can tell you it is frustrating as well.

I just want to make sure it is done right the first time.

crate motors are like factory produced cars, theyre not very special.
yeah theyre a level up from an old tired worn out motor. but Im sure with the level of work hes put into this car he doesnt want just an upgrade. he wants something extra special like the rest of his car. so if it was me I would want to custom pick each part and have everything from the best companies so like he said everything will be right, right now
not to mention crate engines leave so much on the table and can cost more than you can build one for. best bang for your buck is to build a motor not buy an off the shelf motor

Im working with pearls performance in sacramento for my 363 stroker
he shops around to find the best price on the best parts and even takes the time to answer any questions I have regardless of how many I might have. he also recommends things I should or shouldnt do to accomplish my goal of 1000hp to the wheels

calvin is the shop owner and his shop has been in business for EVER his brother owned back in the 80's and when his brother retired he bought it just to keep working there instead of trying to find work in another line of work

give him a call if you want his number is 916-456-7170
    ask for calvin

he can build you anything. he built a few mustangs around town running in the neighborhood of 1200 horse one is even the president of a local car club that has had his car featured on the cover of mustangs monthly

I guess some of us are more interested in actually driving their cars vs than looking at it setting in the corner of the garage, getting every last HP has never worried me... So someone else's build with custom cam makes 15 more Hp than mine, I sleep just fine...

In fact if it had a rumpty rump cam I'd pull it out(and did just that on the 5.0 going in the Comet)...

I doubt a Ford Racing crate engine is level up form a tired old engine.

I agree Tom! If I wanted to get my car on the road I wud go crate motor and be riding "in a minute". No one knows the particulars of ur motor, unless u tell them. Most cars driven any distance - don't need crazy power. Crate motors/engines come in most any performance category ur willing to pay for. JMO...

From my experience and engine builders - forget it! TWO YEARS it took for the last one in my Bronco and had I not been overseas the entire time, I'd have buried my size 9 up his rectal cavity so far he'd have needed a boot extractor to remove it!

Crate motors are the way to go and if you feel otherwise, then I encourage you to spend some time in researching to understand this. I have and I'm completely convinced.

The engine builder had told me, "Well, what I'm doing will guarantee you are 400 lbs of torque at 2k rpms!"

    Whoopie-ding.

$$$ would have been much, MUCH better invested in the crate motor considering the cost-to-power ratio and a fraction, of a fraction, of time. I regret dealing with the engine builder.

    My :2cents:..

I think it all comes down to the level of the build. There’s nothing wrong with a create engine but I think he’s after something a little extra special.

To me, that means a custom power plant with handpicked componentry and a discussion with builder that details all aspects of the end product. Not necessarily a monster build guaranteeing massive HP but more along the lines of specificity regarding tolerances, component manufacturers and targeted performance objectives.

This is all good info that I am interested in too.

Has anyone on here used Precision Race Engines, in Tennessee, or Phoenix Engines???

I am researching this myself and Precision in Tennessee is very expensive, and I don't know enough to know if they're worth it.

I like the idea of having one custom built yourself, but honestly would rather have a. Pro do mine.

I originally thought about a 347 with 400-500 HP...but I think for me that would be overkill. Maybe between 300-400 HP is plenty for an occasional bit of fun.

I've heard you can get as much HP with a good set of heads added to a descent engine setup.

Can I get an awesome engine for less than 6K???
