Probably a T10 - a 4 speed which has been around forever and used in cars and trucks from Chevy, Ford and AMC. Look for a side cover shaped like a "D" held on with 9 bolts.

Here is a stock T10 pic to get an idea if yours matches.

In your 2nd picture - see the "D" shape on that access cover? T10 for sure.

I should add, the Ford version had a metal code tag attached to it. See if you can locate a tag - it will decode what this was from.

    :)

I don't recall seeing the metal tag on it. i'll check it out this wkend, so is the t10 a good trans or a so-so ok trans. I don't want to give up a good auto trans for something that's not worth it.

It was a very worthy transmission - quite strong. Everyone used them for muscle cars and Nascar racing back in the day. There were also truck ratio versions. Until you know what you have it is hard to answer your question. Another thing, it looks like your tranny will need complete going through so remember to add that expense into your calculations for any swap from auto to manual.

The first set of pic don't say anything important. You need to look at the numbers on the case stamped between the side cover and shifter, also on the metal tag. The 2nd pic looks like an early Falcon tailhousing...it won't work in a Maverick or Mustang. Here is a Falcon t-10. You need a tailhousing that has the shifter bolts at the end of the tailhousing. Looks like moisture has been inside the box. T-10 parts expensive. http://1bad6t.com/trans.html

I'll check an see about the metal tag. I know its gonna need going thru but he had a complete kit for it. I was gonna take it an have it rebuilt if it was worth it.

Do you/he have the supporting components(shifter, flywheel, clutch, pressure plate, bellhousing[& maybe starter], pedal, linkage etc?)... Also there is the matter of being correct length for your driveshaft and maybe crossmember...

he did have the shifter linkage and I have clutch pedals but that's all. I don't need to have it in my car right away or at all just seeing if it was worth getting and the c4 for I have is a extra one I had.

Wanted to throw my 2 cents in.
Been researching 4 speed pricing lately for my Dodge I recently purchased. The standard transmissions parts I have noticed are far more expensive then the automatic variants. :hmmm:

I told my father I will definitely avoid manual transmissions in the future. I rebuilt my C4 (kit + fluid + torque convertor) for a 1/4 of the price a clutch, pressure plate, bearings and rebuild kit would cost for my 4 speed.

This deal may be fine, not a direct swap of course, but wanted to just toss in what I have noticed in my research.

If there's ever a chance that you might use a T10, the deal is worth it. And even if you don't use it, the resale price of it is worth more than any C-4.
If you look at the numbers of C-4's out there compared to the numbers of T-10's that are still left. It is definitely worth a trade especially considering he has a rebuild kit that goes along with it. Around here, the rebuild kit alone would probably be worth 2 C-4's.

    Just my opinion,
    Steve

The T10 isn't as strong as the Toploader 4 speed, but it'll do in a pinch

I would have traded on the spot. It's getting hard to find 4 speeds and if it includes a rebuild kit it's a no-brainer.

I paid $1000 for a fresh toploader for my Mav with a flywheel, pp and clutch. Also had a bell I couldn't use and a junky shifter I can't use but the tranny was fresh. Very few C4's will bring that kind of money in any condition.

    T-10s were good trannys.
