I have a Dodge with the A-833 4 speed. Makes a humming/whining noise in neutral with the clutch out, vehicle not moving. Pressing the clutch pedal stops the noise. Doesn't hum in any other gear and doesn't hum when rolling in neutral. Fluid is at appropriate level in the transmission. I haven't separated the trans and motor yet to inspect. Last owner CLAIMS clutch, throw-out bearing, etc. were changed. Many of my friends are saying throw-out bearing, but someone suggested the transmission itself is worn. Any thoughts where the culprit is? I plan to fix in the spring.
That is the sound a worn transmission makes in neutral with the vehicle not moving. I know it well, used to be how we could tell when my sister/bro-in-law would show up places. I would definitely check the intermediary stuff first just to be sure though.
Thanks for the help/idea's Scooper and MSmithPDX. More than likely I will check the throw-out bearing come spring and go from there. Today I attempted to repair the wiper switch Tracking parts down for a D100 is brutal. Anything that's not drivetrain related is pretty much non-existent. Making me wish I just bought a Ford or Chevy truck where parts flow from every catalog/website.
A bad Throw out bearing will make noise when you step on the clutch pedal and slightly enguage the pressure plate. Not when the clutch pedal is out...Yhe TB is not in contact with the pressure plate at that point and will not make noise. You most likely have an input shaft bearing/bushing going bad. It will make noise with no load on it since the clutch disc is attached to it and it is allways spinning...It free wheels with the clutch is depressed and may seem quieter at that point. Good luck!!!
Thanks for the explanation MavMan. :Handshake I am looking through kits with the appropriate bearings and so forth right now. The a833 has several years and variations between models, I am trying to pinpoint the correct kit, I suppose I should get a complete synchro kit and replace those if I crack it open.
I have had mustangs that have done this, make noise when the clutch is not pressed but be quiet when it was pressed. it's not very common but it has happened to us before and in each case it was the throwout bearing
