Hey guys now that I've pretty much finished my Mav in appearance (Id post a picture but Im unsure how to yet) Im now moving on to minor tuning. I dont necessarily like how cold air intakes look but for being relatively cheap im curious on how much of a difference it will make and if its worth the risk of getting wet (I live in Oregon so rain might as well be part of the road). And if there's a way to help the stock intake so a CAI wont be necessary.
usually a ram air set up has problems with rain. a cold air can be located where rain water wont reach it. if you pull air from holes next to the radiator core support you get minimal water. if you put some sort of louvers in the support you should get no water but still get the cool fresh out side air. cold air is definitely more efficient than hot air. yo have to make sure the cold air system is not restrictive in its design.
I've got the stock ram style cold air intake by the battery and I've never had a problem with water in my air box.
depends on your engine build and current air cleaner setup.. but most well designed CAI setups(which usually means more $$$ spent to achieve higher flow) are worth anywhere from 2-30 horsepower. The margin of improvement is wide because it depends on many factors such as if the engine is needing more airflow than the current air cleaner can provide and/or reduced intake air temps to improve power. Larger, and/or higher compression, and/or higher revving motors will see more gains than smaller engines/milder combinations will. If underhood temps are currently very high?.. the average rule of thumb is about 1-2 % power increase per every 10 degree intake charge temp reduction. As with most everything based on percentages though.. the law of diminishing returns always applies.
Thanks for the input guys! Sorry for the late reply. Its a 200ci inline 6. Stock everything but im looking at replacing the muffler with the CB Turbo ii. Im not sure how the factory ran the cold air intake on the older Mavs because I have a 72 and not the 75/76 :/
