Got everything put back together, but originally stabbed the distributor in 180 degrees off. Spun it around and now it starts, seems to be firing on all cylinders, but wont stay running for more than a few seconds. When it dies, the carb catches fire and I have to blow it out. Just ignites whatever is on the butterflies and slowly burns. Good fuel pressure, good spark, etc. Did I blow a power valve or something? what would cause it to die and then breathe fire? Holley 750 Street HP carb. Running around 10 degrees advanced, as far as I can tell. Haven't been able to get it to run long enough to stay running so I can fine tune the timing.
sounds like your just one tooth off on the distributor now. your almost there!!!! got the hat cam ready?!
YUP!!! I backed it off as far as I could go and it started right up and runs fine. Had to shut it down because the paint on the headers started to smoke off, and filled up the garage. Burned my eyes and throat. Let me see if I can find the hat cam...
In my stock car days, we used a 4412 500cfm Holley 2 barrel which was essentially 1/2 of a 4 barrel - every time we backfired, we would blow a power valve so you might want to change it as a precaution once you get things squared away
