Hello, I have a '71 Maverick, 200 engine, auto trans. I'm thinking of changing the tranny fluid myself. I don't have a lift, just jack stands. Is this something I can do myself? Were I to do it, would I find more fluid coming out than what the pan holds--will I be covered in it? Thanks for the advice!
No reason, it's working fine. Just maintenance--hasn't been done for a long time...7 or 8 years maybe. But I don't drive it a lot.
I wouldn't mess with it. If the fluid is still nice and pink and doesn't smell burnt.....just leave it.
Yup, if things are going well don't mess with it. If you do you could actually make it worse than it is now. I know it sounds weird, you'd think regular tranny fluid flushes would be a good thing but it's not. One thing you could do is put a nice strong magnet on the pan to catch any stray bits of metal, and keep them from getting circulated back through. Otherwise like everyone else says just leave it.
I didnt get covered in it... maybe i got lucky but I just went reallllyyy slow and had multiple buckets ready to catch the fluid. i did however get covered in coolant when i musjudged exactly how far it would shoot out of the block, if it's any consolation That being said i agree that if it aint broke you dont need to fix it, at least with transmissions.
I'll check the fluid (with the engine running) and I'll keep an eye on the color and any mineral content. If it checks good, I think I'll let it be. Thanks!
