UPS was rough with the boxes .. Three pegs that hold the monitor in place in the cabinet are broken. The tray that holds the printer and paper is also broken.. BUT it all still functions as far as I can tell. I will be contacting UPS to see what they are going to do. The seller says he purchased insurance. The Hunter rep has told me that any parts needed will most likely be used because the parts are no longer available. Luckily there are still plenty of used parts. I will be looking for the stuff I need to keep it for a while.
In one of the boxes there was some books. One has the specs for our "vintage" cars. And the other has the ride heights. The machine will need some work and then it will need to be calibrated before I can use it..
I can already tell you what UPS is going to say----It was not packaged good enough, been there done that. They state that is must be padded and be able to withstand a drop of 3'. They will want to see the packaging that it came in This is not always the case though and generally they will pay extra attention to a package that has been insured. Hopefully all goes good for you
I have all the packaging. 5 boxes. The monitor one says "Fragile!" .. And if they say it wasn't packaged good enough then I will ask why they insured it then.. I paid $500 for shipping and don't expect it broken.
UPS isn't called United Parcel Smashers for no good reason. They damage our restored trim all of the time. We ship hood and trunk mouldings in heavy cardboard carpet tubes. Their explanation is that they are too long to go around the curved conveyors, and cause a jam. Too long? they are well within the limits. The rocker mouldings are longer, they bung those up too. We probably make 4-5 claims a month.
Well, I only can go by whats shown but I don't see any padding in that 3rd pic? If the whole thing was packed like that, imo, the seller is responsible not ups. I hope you took a lot of pics of the packing job.
Even if they cared, why would they have noticed? It may have looked fantastic from the outside when it was shipped. Heavy bulky items need mucho protection especially in the corners. You won't see anything by just looking at the outside of a box. They assume the seller packs it adequately. If he did, UPS is pretty good at reimbursing. 3rd pic shows differently though.
That corner opened and yea, the seller used peanuts to fill the voided areas. Inside, most of the parts were wrapped with tape and foam padding. The peanuts were gone in that particular corner from spilling out. Here is the monitor box. There were 5 boxes..
I'm sure they don't know.. I never said they did. I do know that I care and I paid the insurance they asked if I wanted. All I can do is report what I have found. I am also peeved that as the driver was unloading, I opened the box with the monitor so I could check it since I figured it would be the most fragile part. He turned the corner into my shop and scolded me about opening the box before signing. I explained to him that I didn't know it was against the law. Then he told me he couldn't find the 5th box so he would have to "come back tomorrow". I explained that the shop is not open to the public and I would not be there tomorrow. Then he said "then I guess you'll have to wait till Monday". I then told him I would be in Dallas Monday. He says "I don't have time to look, I have to get back to work". Then I said "it's all work anyway!". He gave me a go to hell look and it took all of 10 seconds to find the last box. Encountering his attitude I do believe as you say, they don't care.
Wow that sucks....a little panel bond adhesive will probably fix it all. Hopefully they didn't crack the tail of the monitor....
It may come to that.. The monitor turns on. I laid the cabinet on it's face to eliminate the monitor from laying on the circuitry. It needs whatever repair now that I have it in this position and opened.. I tried to initiate a claim and it says package not eligible. I kinda expected that. Ins is to make money..
It's common for plastic cabinets to bust out the CRT mounts... To repair keep it laying on face, carefully remove back and loosen strap on CRT bell to relive tension(no doubt it's already loose)... At that point you can use your favorite plastic cement to reattach mounts... No doubt would be a good idea to allow plenty of time for glue to cure and do not tighten band more than lightly snug... Possibly you can devise a method of reinforcing the mount that utilizes additional support, maybe a anchor screw/pin inserted from the front face of cabinet...
