I was wondering about swapping the original 4 cilinder engine of my 1977 Maverick by a modern engine (like the one of Ford Ranger OHC 2.3L) but after researching a little I found out I would be no big deal.

I was talking to a friend of my father who works with Honda/Toyota engines repairing and he said an internal supercharger/blower would be perfect for both gaining more speed/HP and little increase of fuel consumption.

Well, anybody know about a supercharger/blower I can use in the Ford OHC 2.3 4 cilinder engine (that´s the engine of the Maverick 77) ??? I think a Eaton or Paxton supercharger will work but I need to find out what.

    IMPORTANT:

1 - Ok the V8 engine is much more powerful but I intend to use my car for street and weekend trips. This muscle V8 has a consumption of 2-3 Km/liter of gas and it´s out of question for me. I will not literally burn my money that way.

2 - I don´t want an external blower because I want to keep the clean look of the car.

    Thanks for any help.

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
You might want to swap a 2.8 in there they make alot of parts for them, i'm not sure if they have alot of junkyards in brazil, but theres a bunch here with 2.8.

I dont see how you figure a v-8 will only get 2-3 km/liter. Closer to 6-7. Still not great, but not nealy as bad as you're thinking.

I'm not that familiar with the 2.3 engines you guys have down there, but the 2.3's from the 80's Thunderbirds and Mustang SVO's were factory turbocharged. The '84-'85 SVO had 175 HP and the 85.5-86 were 205 and under-rated. I had an '84...great little car. Got 30+ mpg and still was a pretty fun car to drive. The thunderbird turbocoupes had a couple different years and configurations. The '83-'86 were non-intercooled and small-ish turbos and I believe were only rated to 150 HP, IIRC (somewhere around there). The '87-'88's were intercooled, larger turbo, better exhaust and made I think 200 HP (manual trans models). The automatic trans models were slightly lower HP due to smaller turbo.

If the brazilian 2.3 is the same basic engine, I see no reason a SVO or t-bird 4 cylinder wouldn't be a direct bolt-in.

im guessing this is probably the same engine the pintos of the period had? might be cool to pull one out of a turbo 'stang or t-bird from the '80's.

i'd like to see some underhood pics, never seen a 4cyl mav :)

Here in Brasil there was no 2.8 engine for Maverick. I think this engine was exclusive to US market.

In Brazil there was three engines for Maverick:

    Ford OHC 2.3 4 cilinder

    Willys-Overland 2.6 6 cilinder

    Ford (canadian) 302 8V 8 cilinder

Anyway the production of Maverick in Brazil was something low and it´s not so easy to find part on junkyards.
