When I did a rebuild on the 75's front end I also did the brakes. New calipers (NAPA reman), rotors, NAPA pads, new wheel bearings. Scuffed the rotors, did 5-6 medium stops from 35 to seat the pads. Now I have a rattle on the right front It goes away if I lightly touch the brake pedal. Checked all the bolts for tightness; looks fine. The stationary pad does move around easily. When I spin the wheel I hear a light clicking noise; 1 or 2 per revolution. No apparent interference with calipers and wheels, their after market. Brakes work fine. Is it the pads moving:confused: Did I screw up the new wheel beaings:confused: Help RichK
The tabs on the outer brake pad needs to be hit with a hammer & brass driff or chisel. It can be done by one person, though it's better with 2. I work for Midas & brakes are what I do. Let me explain. step 1. There are 2 tabs on the outer pad (on top). These need to be tight. If they aren't they will move & cause a rattle, clicking sound. step 2. I use a chisel to wedge between the bottom of the pad & rotor (use a hammer). Make sure the pad doesn't move now. step 3. Bend the tabs on top with a hammer. When you think they are tight. Then take the chisel out. Check & make sure they don't move. If you can't move the outer pad, then it's tight. You should have no more rattle or clicking. step 4. If you use another person to help you. Push the pad as far up as it will go. Have the other person put there foot on the brake pedal. Then bend the tabs down with a hammer. When tight have them take there foot off the pedal. Check & see if they are tight. That should take care of the problem. Hope all goes well for you. Let me know if it works.
I thought on a Ford, there is these little silver "anti-rattle" clips that go on the end tabs of the pads. I know on some Chevies, the D52 pad and some others, have to be bent down on the top ears of the outboard pad.
richk, i just went through the "rattle from hell" . i did the front brakes on my 77' the day before i took my 800 mile trip this weekend. it was driving me crazy. when i got home i pulled in and got the jack out and did the hammer thing before i went into the house. not only will it move up and down it will also move front to back. check and make sure it doesn't move at all . teecee, the inside pad has an antirattle clip....frank...
nawww...he is right...you have to bend the tabs...and if the calipers rattle on bumps (kinda like a thumping noise) you may need new springs that go between the caliper and that uhhhh slidy thing you hammer in to hold tha caliper in. pretty sure the part is a raybestos number h5114. they look like a leaf spring about 2 or 3 inches long.
Yes, the inner pad should have a anti rattle clip. It goes on the bottom of the inner pad, keeps it from moving. If you have the clip & have hammered the outer pad on the top 2 tabs, there should be no rattle or clicking. A new hardware kit will come with 2 anti rattle clips, if you've lost any or they were damaged cause you went metal to metal.
clicking from brake where can u get the spring and clips if i happen to need them? havent checked yet but i have the clicking noise from the brakes
H5527 hardware kit. Comes with a anti-rattle clip, a support key (the part that goes between the caliper anchor and the caliper), and a support key spring (the thing that looks like a leaf spring). Some kits come with 2 each of these parts. RockAuto is back ordered. Try a local parts store.
