My Mav came stock with a 250 and C4, I was told the bellhousing will bolt right up to the 302, but my 302 has a 164t Flexplate.

The question is, do I need a 157t Flexplate/matching TC? And if so, for the 157t weight, should I just weigh the 164t one and match it?

    The 164 takes a bigger tc. I think it is 11 1/2. The 157 takes a 10 1/2 (from stud to stud).

You can use the bigger one but you will need a bigger bellhousing. I happen to have one laying around...

From what I've read it appears that the smaller bellhousing makes for better clearance for Headers.

Does the 164t flexplate/bigger TC and bellhousing setup increase performance? If so, how?

no... smaller TC is better... higher stall.
    I'm using a 302 flexplate and bell on my 410ci with a 10" converter.

If you switch to the smaller bellhousing you will need the 157 tooth flexplate, the smaller TC, and the matching engine plate. Unless you have a late model 302 the balance will be 28 oz. for either. Late models used 50 oz. The smaller bellhousing gives you a little more clearance. Not sure if you'll have header problems or not with the bigger one. Make sure of the number of splines on the input shaft. Sometime in 70 they changed from 24 to 26 splines. If your 71 or later you need the 26 spline TC.:)

The engine is an 87' so i need the 28 oz flexplate and a 26 spline TC? Don't know much about engine plates. Got a pic of what it looks like? Is it the thin sheet of metal behind the flexplate?

There are two block plates (thin metal plate between the engine and whatever bolts to the crank) The 164 tooth gear uses one and the 157 tooth gear uses the other. They need to have the cooresponding bell housing because the starters are in different locations. There is no real strength difference between them so put on the small ring gear and use the bell from the 250. You should be able to use the converter from the 250 as well.

    Good info. Thanks!

So the term is 'block plate' or 'engine plate'? or are they interchangeable?

    They are used interchangably.

When purchasing the TC, I should look for 157t and C4 specific?

Yep... Make sure it has the same splines as your output shaft on your c4. Probably 26...

Good deal. What kind of pricing am I looking at? For the flexplate, TC, and block plate individually. Gonna have to buy them at different times because my wife is pregnant with our first child and it is really stretching us financially. But I suppose the baby is more important than getting the Mav running. :p

Hm, pricey, it seems. Will definitely go the used route.

How do I check the splines? Must I remove the input shaft? It's a stock C4 (1977) so should I be able to tell just by the year it was manufactured?
