From one source: "DSO, which stands for District Sales Office, is either the special paint order for the car or the manner of its delivery." ( http://www.squarebirds.org/1960dso_scott_wright.htm )

And "District Special Order" from http://www.428cobrajet.com/info.html

The following looks legit (from http://web.tampabay.rr.com/theflock/mustang/doorplate.html#dso) :

"Standing for the District Sales Office. The DSO identifies the area of the country the car was to be shipped to.

DSO LOCATION DSO LOCATION DSO LOCATION
11 Boston Region 47 Cincinnati Region 79 West Marketing Area
13 New York Region 48 Detroit Region 81 Ford Home Office / Mazda Constant Dealer Code
16 Philadelphia Region 49 Great Lakes Marketing Area 82 Nissan for 1993
19 North Marketing Area 52 Dallas Region 83 Government
21 Atlanta Region 53 Kansas City Region 84 Home Office Reserve
23 Memphis Region 56 Denver Region 85 American Red Cross
24 Orlando Region 58 Twin Cities Region 86 Recreational Vehicle Pool
27 Washington Region 59 Central Marketing Area 87 Body Company
29 South Marketing Region 71 Los Angeles Region 89 Transportation Services
41 Chicago Region 72 San Francisco Region 90s Export
    44 Pittsburgh Region 74 Seattle Region "

    And your's is????

    "and yours is?"

The DSO on my plate is 742109.
The plate has no paint code on it.
The only paint identification is the word "mango" stamped on the inside of the trunklid.
I didn't see it listed in the available colors on the info site, or any orange for that matter.
What do you make of that?

Your car is a special order paint code. Eitehr the dealer that sold it new ordered it that way...or it was a special promotional color for that sales district.

    What color is it?

    paint color

    it's a nice brilliant orange.
Unfortunately, the car seems to have a bit of a checkered past
and has been the victim of a large amount of filler on the rear quarters (plus my own recent idiotic mistake see 'testament to a torque wrench' post) and a very poorly matched respray.
I can put a pic or two up if you want, I'll just need to go take them.

    This is the color.

My car was, and still is sort of, this color and had the same stripe and all.
    Same year too!
Think it was ordered as a non grabber factory hotrod?
It's manual brakes, manual steering, no A/C no frills.
    just wishful thinking.
doesn't really matter much. It is definately fast now after my meddling.
    hehe
