I am painting my engine compartment satin black like the earlier model Mavs. At the top of the firewall there is a panel that the windshield washer "squirters" pass are fastened. Some of the pics I have on file of cars with black engine compartments show this panel painted body colour; others show it painted black. Anyone know how the cars came from the factory? Thanks. John B.

All engine compartments that I've seen, come with the factory exterior paint in them. If they are black, then they were painted. It's up to the individual how they want to do it, when they paint it. When I painted mine, I did all that you can't see when the hood is closed. The Sprint engine compartment was all white, bet that was fun to keep clean. Someone has painted it all black (needs to be redone). Hope this helps.

John B: I have 2 72 Comets. One is a 72 GT green with satin black under hood, the top panel is painted green body color. The other is tan with body color under hood. It is a 2 door that will be a black GT clone when finished. It will be body color black under the hood when finished including the top panel you are refering to. I should mention that both these are orginal. I am the second owner of both. Hope this helps.

Seth I got your check. glad to be of help. I read the message board several times a day and have been a member for quite a while. Any time I can be of help to anyone here I sure will try. Maybe I should say that the first new car I bought was a 71 Comet GT. Black with silver stripes. 302 2 barrel. No they did not put a 4 barrel on them. If they had I would have had one. C4 transmission. 279 rear gears. Handling suspension package. A whopping $2888.00. I have also owned a 71 maverick 2 door, a 77 maverick 2door. 250 engine. 2 72 Comets. One a green GT the other a 2 door which will be a black GT clone when finished. Also a 72 4 door parts car. sorry for the long post.

My 73 Comet has 9500 miles on it, and come in body color. It has the inspection stamps (1/2 " yellow paint stamp) in the engine bay. If your car does not have the stamps around the engine compartment, and on the hood, i would suspect it has been repainted. If it has the stamps, I would suspect it is original, as I doubt anyone (other then me) would but the rubber stamps, locate the yellow paint and apply it.
