So, I start working on that new '71 that I picked up last weekend. I hit the starter and it just spins. So I think, it's just a starter gear or the bendix is not engaging. When I pull the starter I found that the teeth on the flywheel are DESTROYED. From what I could see, most of them where almost gone! AHH!! :16suspect If I remember right, these are integrated with the TC?
Ford used a separate flex plate that unbolts from the crankshaft and torque converter. You will have to pull the transmission, but overall other then being a slight PITA it is not a complicated or a costly job to replace the ring gear. You can have a machine shop cut out the old gear and replace it, or just find a good used one at a yard or off ebay. Good luck, Eric
Good. I've pulled tons of transmissions - that's no big deal. I'm glad to hear it is bolted. :bananaman Thanks!
b&m flexplates are about $64 in the summit catalog. probably better than the cost of having a machine shop do the work for you.
Well, I went up to a friends who has a a '71 drivetrain. The ring gear is on the TC, like I first thought. :16suspect I forgot to mention that the '71 has a 200 in it. I attached a picture of the TC we pulled off his '71 tranny. I'll probably just end up buying another TC
Well how about that - all the ones I've had were bolted to the crankshaft. Even pulled out my shop manual and looked, and they show a separate flexplate, even for the 200.
The TC in the picture came out of a '71 with a 200. I assume that the 250/302 TCs have a ring gear seperate from the TC.
OK - the 200 does have a flexplate but the ring gear is part of the converter. Here is the Ford part number and description. C3DZ-6375B, Flexplate (ring gear is on converter) I was totally thinking of the ring gear being on the flexplate like a 302 has.
Before you spend a lot on a new converter, take your old one into a machine shop. They could probably weld on a new ring gear for a decent price. Worth checking into.
If I want to go cheap, Oreilly's has a TC w/ ring gear for about $50. I'll either buy that, or pull one out of my parts car. I'm surprised at how bad the teeth are on this ring gear. They must have done alot of those double-starts!
Yep, I've seen several of those type flywheel/converters and they've always been on the early 200's. If you can get one for $50 that's a deal. I would never try to repair one for that. If I'm not mistaken I don't think you can remove the ring gear on them anyway...but I may be wrong.
