does anyone know what a fair price would be to have a flywheel turned(reground smooth)?figure i might as well have it done, when i put my new clutch kit in come springtime.thanks...chuck.
Always, always, always refurface your flywheel when you install a new clutch. Also look for a shop that uses a flywheel grinder, with a stone-type cup, instead of a machine that uses a cutter bit (similar to a disc rotor). I used to sell engine rebuilding equipment (back before interest rates hit 21%) and I sold more flywheel grinders than anything. As far as prices, the last time I checked prices (1982), you could get a flywheel ground smooth for $25.
I'm not sure re-balancing, per se, has to be done as a separate function. When using a quality, precision leveled, flywheel grinder, you take off an equal amount of surface material over the whole flywheel, thus maintaining the same weight proportions throughout.
hit the nail on the head. If it's done right, with machine that Terry spoke of, it won't need rebalanced. I have used them several times, and the same machine will also double for resurfacing heads, intake manifolds, and exhaust manifolds. One of the best machines that a machine shop could own. When the local shop was open, they charged $20 to resurface a flywheel. Same type machine. The ones that use cutters like a rotor lathe take off too much material and if the cutters are not kept super sharp, they will eat up the surface in short order. That, and the operator had better be sharp as well.
I just paid $35 last week to have my flywheel resurfaced. The extra weight on the flywheel is cast into the rear, it would have to be machined off, then balanced.
I paid $40 for mine. I have a billet flywheel that has bolt-on weights so you can remove them for 0 balance. Dan you probably want a machine shop that can balance your flywheel, crank, and front damper together. If your engine is already together you'll still need to do something with the front damper too.
I have a factory 302 Flywheel ... The offset weight is cast into the wheel. Might be easier and cheaper to sell this one and buy a new 0 imbalance ....
mine had small cast iron weights tacked to it...we just knocked em off and resurfaced it...it works fine, I think if it didn't there would be a noticeable vibration from the motor. Summit has a neutral/internal balance 157 tooth 10.5 or 11" flywheel for 224 bucks, thats not as much as a neutral harmonic balancer
I was thinking I could pick this one up cheap ... Grind off the welds on the weight and be good to go ... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7951078725
if it's the correct diameter and number of teeth, I dont see why it wouldn't, it has worked fine for my 302.
