I am in the market for a paint gun. I was wondering what brand and type to get? Where is the best place to get it? What is the price range I should expect to pay? I am looking for a good quality gun that will do a nice job. I will not be using it everyday, just about a half a dozen times a year. Quality is more important to me than price but I don't want to pay for something that is overpriced.

Kinda like asking whats the best color to paint a car. I havent had much luck with HVLP stuff but no matter which way you go, I definately like the gravity fed gund over the suction cup, although currently my best gun is a Devilbiss suction cup. Let me know what you get cause I wouldnt mind another one too.
Finishline HVLP gravity feed FLG-643 is the model #. I have owned it bout a year. Was talking to Dennis when he was here about it and how I could not get used to it. I was set to go out and get a SATA when last weekend I decided to just go ahead and use the finishline on my old truck I am repainting. I mixed paint just a little thinner than usual. WOW, there was the trick. Does metallics perfectly and lays clearcoat so well that I wont need to color sand at all. Best all around gun I have yet owned. It is made by DeVilbiss and my last favorite gun was made by them too. I payed around $120.00 for the Finishline and bought it thru O'reillys. Dan
If you decide on a suction feed standard pressure gun I have a Binks 2000 I bought some years ago, paid $180 for it and painted 2 cars. Just been sitting in the drawer since then. You can try it out first to see if it works for you.
for painting cars... go with gravity fed HVLP guns.. they have the best paint finish of allt he guns out there... for primers and sealers.. go with a suction fed conventional spray gun... you can use the HVLP for all paints... but in my 16 years of painting experience, i find a HVLP gun is best for autmotive paints.. and a conventional (NON-HVLP) gun best for primers, where the paint finish isnt a real concern since you usually block out a primer filler before paint.. also a touch up gun for small painting projects or touching up a base coat just before a clear coat
I have the DeVilbiss Finishline HVLP 2 gun set that Eastwood sells for $100. I am super happy with it. I made the switch over from suction gun to HVLP without too much problem. I would not go back to a suction gun for finish work, but I do have a couple $30 Sears suctions for primer and junk work. Here is a link to Eastwoods and the set I have. http://www.eastwoodco.com/jump.jsp?itemID=12296&itemType=PRODUCT&path=1%2C2%2C503%2C523%2C524&KickerID=240&KICKER Eric J
It really doesnt matter what type off gun suction or gravity they both can have the same quality with todays technology you can get high quality HVLP suction feed guns from the top brands like SATA. The head painter at my shop uses nothing but suction and can paint circles around our gravity feeds with it. wont touch a gravity gun, coarse hes been doing this long before i was ever on this earth. Up north here he was "THE PERSON" to get your car painted by 10-20 years ago.
I have been in the market for a new gun for some time and after rereading this thread and talking to Dan again I decided on the same one he has. I searched the internet and found this place. Prices are very good. Beat everyone elses prices by at least $25. Also I had some questions and used their Email customer service format. I got a responses within 5 minutes after submitting my questions. I've tried online customer services before and usually its a day or so waithing for a response. I was impressed. I ordered the FLG643 with the 1.5 fluid tip along with a 1.8 fluid tip. Total price with shipping was $126.87 www.toolrage.com
