What does everyone here who stores their car do to keep mice away? I've been battling this problem for years. Just tonight I pulled 3 mouse nests from behind the back seat of my Mav. The little bastards used the insulation from under the seat and behind the side panels to make their nest. Now the whole car smells like mouse urine and I'll probably have to replace the carpet I've set traps (which work some of the time) and I've bought those electronic things that don't work at all. I have a cat but I won't let her in the garage because her nails scratch the paint. I know snakes eat mice but I hate snakes even more. Any suggestions? Sam
Sam, I dont have rodent problems cause I paint. They seem to hate that. I did store one of my cars in a storage unit once and I saw signs of mice in the unit. I put mothballs in the interior, underhood, trunk and all over the storage unit. No mice, but the car stunk so bad afterwards I had to let it air out for days and days. We live in the country and I fought mice getting into my attic, I tried everything for a number of years except an exterminator. I should have done it first, the little bastards ate thru my ceiling. I have not had any mice since the exterminator and he visits once a month to keep everything going. Best money I coulda spent. Dan
They got on top of my engine and crapped on the intake manifold, but so far I haven't seen any damage and they haven't gotten inside the car. I have a friend who's Cadillac got the wires under the hood chewed up by mice and it was not drivable until he spent 5 hours rewiring everything. I hate those damned things...
Don't laugh, OK laugh if you want, I've been keeping Irish Spring soap in my cars and on the floor of my garage ever since I read about it in a Mustang & Fords article a while back. Granted I didn't have a mouse problem to begin with but I'm paranoid and I can say FWIW I'm still rodent free.
I had so many droppings in my 73 2-door that I could not get that smell out of my car. It is unbelievable the places those little suckers can fit. I am going to sandblast the whole car I swear just to get rid of that horrible smell. I pulled out my headliner, seats and carpet etc. I even threw my interior out because I could not get rid of the odor. My car had sat outside for several years in the previous owners drive. It's a good thing the car is getting a complete makeover or I would have considered selling/totalling it. Yuck.
After my mav was settin at my uncles house for four months there was a nest in my glove box and in my front bench seat so as soon as I could I ripped out the old front seat and put in some buckets , my best 40 bux spent ever .
i understand that soap keeps "elephants" away also. have you seen any elephants sence you have been using that soap?...frank...:bananaman :bananaman
No elephants Frank, I guess that proves it works! However I have seen elephant tracks in my butter...maybe I should start keeping Irish Spring in the fridge too.
Seriously man, I kid you not. On page 40 of the Sept. '03 issue of M&F, they suggest using Irish Spring for rodent prevention.
I had a mouse in the attic awhile back. I bought some mouse bait killer at the Home Depot. It's kinda like a candy bar with wrapper. Just tossed it in the attic and a couple days latter no mouse. They eat it and it makes them thirsty. When they find something to drink KABOOM, they explode.
hypothetical situtation. Dennis has a cat, and he has some of that candy bar type mouse killer. Cat eats stuff and goes Kaboom too? Dan
Cats won't ear that stuff. Unlike dogs, cats smell thier food before they eat it. If it smells funny to them, they won't eat it. The mouse baits work pretty good at getting rid of mice. If you really want to get the little buggers attention, smear some peanut butter on the baits. Not a lot, just enough for them to smell it. They can't resist peanut butter. Bye, bye rodents.
