I was still having the problem with the motor "bogging" in high second gear. Turns out it wasn't the fuel pump, but the tranny started slipping on the 1-2 shift horribly and 2-3 slip was getting worse ( junkyard tranny). Checked tranny fluids, replaced filter and went out and had some fun. Well, long story short, my tranny gave out on me on Saturday! Wouldn't really engage into drive and when it did the motor would rev but the car would go about 2 mph. It would just creep....dropped it into first and the same thing! Reversed worked okay, but it wouldn't really shift into drive. Limped it back to the shop, checked it out...no leaks but it just got worse after that. So....in researching a new c4 I found what I think may be a deal. Need some input on a reverse pattern full shift c4. I talked to the guy from Redneck performance (Ebay) and he said the tranny is good for about 650hp, built in trans-brake (which can be bypassed or taken out) and a custom stall converter. Does anyone use a full shift reverse pattern tranny that could give me some input? This means I have to "manually" shift gears, right? I installed the B&M starshifter, the one that you pull the lever, drop in into 1st and then manually shift. Will they work together...... i run a r/m ati vb in my sons mav. its okay on the street. just shift a lot. stay in 2nd more than usual. do you realize that usually there is no band apply in 1st gear? that means if you let off the gas pedal while in 1st gear, there is no compression braking: ie you coast instead of slowing. and if you then hit the gas too hard to get the rpms back up to where it locks up, you can blow up the drum. let me know if you need a more complete description of this situation. not a big deal, you just have to realize what you have.
No I didn't know that, I am still trying to wrap my head around it. What do you mean by blow up the drum?
The auction says it is rated for 450 hp. The Starshifter will not work with the Reverse Pattern valve body
ok. start off in 1st gear up to maybe 3000 or 4000 rpm, let off the gas. then put it to the floor. the engine revs freely until it reachs the rpm you let off at & then hits the tires hard. kids think its great. almost like revving in neutral & yanking the trans into gear. with a 2.46 low times 4000 rpm, you are freewheeling an oem drum at about 10,000 rpm. not a good thing to do. can explode the drum. just dont abuse it. drive it right. its not a huge deal. if im coming down to a red lite, i come down in 2nd which acts normal and slows the car. at some point i put it in 1st and coast. if lite goes green before i have almost stopped, i just shift up into 2nd and go. if almost stopped in 1st, i just gently step on the gas until car starts to accel & then its fine. after a while, its just a habit, no big deal. basically, dont get on it in 1st, let off the gas, then get back on it hard still in 1st. i like the r/m vb. nothing shifts quite as well. also be aware that it will eat a couple of hp because of higher line pressures created. does this help any?
You can save yourself the headache and $$$....do you really need a reverse manual trans with a transbrake? How often will you be using the T-brake? Ask yourself the questions and be honest..... Another option would be to build your own transmission. C4s are super simple to build. If you can build an engine, a transmission isn't much harder...especially a C4. You can also make your own manual valvebody fairly easily with the right shift kit. Even a stock C4 valvebody can be made to shift as good as a TB valve body. Dad builds all his own C4's. I build my own Powerglides. I think dad usually has about $300 including parts in a good C4. 'Glides are a little more, but we won't go into detail on those. He's making around 470-490 HP in his 331 and a home-built C4 is doing great...and has for the last 8(?) years. Just a good valvebody and attention to detail.
Thanks for all the help guys, I'm thinking I might get some quotes on just rebuilding my tranny or buying a moderately built c4
