Just joined the forum and am and very happy to see a whole page dedicated to transmissions. I have a problem that I am sure one of yall could help me with. I drive a 1966 Ford Mustang with a 200CI Inline 6 and the stock C4 transmission. It started to leak so naturally we replaced the seal with a rubber replacement and that did not stop the leak. Next we replaced it with a cork one that we made by tracing the original. When pouring in the transmission fluid it leaked again but I noticed that it was not coming from the seal but rather from a small 1/4 inch metal hose bent at a 90 degree angle down to the ground located on the drivers side towards the rear of the car. I can watch the fluid just drain out of this little hose when it is poured in from up top but not a drop from the seal. So, knowing that the leak is not from the seal what is this "hose". I will try to attatch pictures. Thanks, Thomas
Picture file size are to large but hopefully someone will know what this is. Thanks Thomas Heres a link to another forum where the pictures worked ... thanks ... http://www.allfordmustangs.com/forums/classic-tech/86302-help-identify-transmission-leak.html
I know what it is. That is the vent tube that is attached to the top of your transmission housing, I have never seen one leak unless the transmission is too full. Check your fluid with the engine running on a level surface and in park.
i agree. i've had some of these tubes facing downward and some others facing forward. either you have ot too full or there is another problem.
Thanks ... just talked to a transmission specialist on the phone and he told me the same ... vent tube ... When I replaced the transmission pan gasket I thought I needed to add seven quarts of transmission fluid instead it only needed about 3 thus the overflow ... Thanks Thomas
Oh and we are draining some of the fluid and later we will crank it and run it some to see how it works ... hopefully we won't blow a seal ... Thomas
Next time you take that pan off, put on a drain plug (kit from any of the local auto parts stores...look for B&M packaging). It will probably leak a little if you don't put it on really good, but you could drop 2-4 quarts without having to take off the pan and gasket. Remove that pan a few times and you may as well just expect leaks for life...
Whenever you fill or check the transmission the engine should be running and at an idle with the tranny in park.
