Building a Custom Grille

It hate to tell you this but I think Chrysler stole your idea. They put it on the Liberty. Now I know where they got that look from.

Adds a real different look to the Cherokee. Driven Cherokees since 1994. Just sold mine a few months back and miss it dearly. They are just too rusty up here now. I think your grill is something along the lines of what Jeep could have done to freshen up the Cherokee instead of axing it for that Liberty junk. Now we have compass and Patriot stinkin up the Jeep name with front wheel drive CVT trans.....Oh boy.

 

I laugh because I built true tube fenders for our Cherokee and tube doors and now if you look at Bushwacker they sell an almost identical looking plastic tube fender and wilderness sells tube doors that resemble mine. I guess the biggest compliment is someone wanting to use your designs. I just wish I got some of the royalties.

 

Man, that looks beyond awesome. Gives me hope for my '74 grille project.

 

What did you use for the rings/cans/housings?

That's great work! Very difficult to work with the old plastics like that.

PLEASE ADD THIS TO THE TECH ARTICLES STEFAN!!!

This would make an excellent addition to the "cosmetic/paint/body work" section. Maybe, with a list of all the materials (i.e. epoxies, paint adhesion promoters, and list of tools used). It's very difficult to find aftermarket parts for our cars like this and I think it's a great idea.

Also, I second the idea of getting this thing molded and produced. I would buy one in a heartbeat. I've been playing around with this exact same idea for quite some time, and the process used here is very detailed and thorough! Answered several of my " I wonder how..." questions.

I used 5" inside diameter 1/4" ABS plastic tube

The install will be awhile. The car is currently on a roustiserrie (SP) and the body work is almost done. I am hoping to get it painted in the next month or two. Then the fun will begin on putting it back together. There are a lot of parts that I have been working on to get them restored so they are worthy of going back on the car.

I want to thank the members on here for the parts and information I have needed to get this far.

I have thought about starting a build thread on the car. I have documented most of it with pictures. Let me know if that is something members would be interested in or if it would be a waste of time.

Thank you for the great comments and the detailed phone conversation on how you approached your grille build up. I tried to change mine up some so it would not be identical to yours.
