As long as the price is right it wouldn't matter too much. You won't find too many Comet GT's, clone or real. If you like the style and the options it still could be an enjoyable car even if its not "original".
I've already scarfed it up. Just trying to see if there is a way to confirm the GT. It has all the right trim codes, body codes, etc. It is white with a black vinyl top and red stripe and red interior. Bucket seats, column shift C-4. I'm in it for less than a thousand. Had a bad freeze plug that caused the previous (second) owner to sell. Fixed that, installed EB carb, intake, cam, and some headers. 3.25 gear in the rear 8". Runs and drives nice now. Next is front-end rebuild and disc brake upgrade. New headliner going in this week. Car also has slotted aluminum mags. Jim
Cool Jim- I operate the '71-'75 Comet GT Registry. If you would like it added, let me know the VIN, Door data tag info and your contact info. Pics are also encouraged. I would like to see pics of that one. I have only seen one '71/'72 GT with red stripes. That was a long time ago. Post some pics if possible. All the other white GT's with red interior that I have seen have black stripes. I am not positive that the red striped car that I saw had original tape stripes. Are your stripes painted on? Do they have "COMET GT" cut out on the front fenders? Seth redcometgt@aol.com
Seth, I sent you an e-mail with the VIN. However, I had my son re-check the paint. He is in Boise where the car is. It looks like a repaint of the original White with a red pin-stripe painted on. However, in the door-jams it has two black stripes. It also looks like the vinyl roof was red with black paint over it. Jim
i just found one to blue with cool pin striping on it 3 speed floor shifter 302 buckets duel rear ash trays and to top it off the motor has only turnd 38000 as of last month 2ed owner car (origonal was the owner of buy rite ) never herd of em guy wants 2400 if i can get the money ill get it
Red Vinyl top? I have seen white with red interior and black vinyl top and stripes. I have never seen a GT with a red vinyl top. That would be an interesting combo. The original black stripes available. Seth
Marti Seth, received the Marti report today. It confirms the GT Appearance Group and Red Tweed Vinyl Roof. It was bought originally in Boise, ID where I bought it and it is now. Built April 6, 1971.
That's great. Congrats on the find. If you want, e-mail me the details of the Marti report and I will add it to the Registry. Thanks, Seth redcometgt@aol.com
I just bought this 71 Comet GT Hi guys. First post here so I'll try not to be too long winded right off the bat. I just recently aquired the car discussed in this thread and was hoping to dig up any additional info that I can find. My biggest question is whether or not the discussion of this car originally coming from the factory with a red vinyl top was ever confirmed. It appears that Seth(aka.. littleredtoy) may have received additional info, and I have tried to contact him, but I was hoping to confirm if anyone else around here has ever seen another Maverick of Comet come factory equipped with a Red vinyl top. I've been working on old Ford Musclecars for many years and as most of us know by now.. surface impressions are hard to read from an originality standpoint. The car seems very unmolested and for its age(and much newer) is one of the most solid unibody cars that I have ever purchased. With that in mind I should have very little difficulty restoring it to a "fresh daily driver" #2 condition. The car is superb from a sheetmetal and undercarriage standpoint. Barely even any surface rust anywhere on the entire car. No one ever hates that restoration time savings, that's for sure. The car has the original 2.79 open rearend(which seems rather odd since it was mentioned that the car had 3.25 gears in this very thread, so I can only assume that either the OP was mistaken or some performance swappery had taken place along the line somewhere).. and that will have to be upgraded to handle "ocassionally malicious" street duty of course. The last car that I had the same high-revving drivetrain intended for this car in?.. went WELL over 130 with 3.00 gears and even hit 60 in 1st and 100 in 2nd. Way to much for stock'ish type suspension for sure. The driveshaft also looks like I could grab both ends and twist it up with my bare hands.. so a custom unit is in order there. I also have this nagging curiosity about the possibility that Ford/Mercury would have had the option of red GT stripes for these cars. I cannot seem to find any cars with red vinyl tops and/or red striping. The top does appear to be original and as discussed in this thread earlier has been painted black. Albeit very poorly I might add as you can see a pink cast showing through in larger areas. I did a small sample of paint removal using waterborne paint remover to see if in fact the previous red color had been painted on to better match the red interior and it is in fact red vinyl without any color underneath it. Some very small amounts of air ripples/bubbles(with no apparent rust scale under it) are my only issue and should be easy enough to repair even witrhout actually removing the top to do so. My last question is in regards to the mention of adding this car to the registry. Is there any way to confirm that and find out if any additional info may have been furnished at that time? Sorry to be longer winded than originally anticipated.. but you surely know how the excitement level goes up when you think there is possibility that you may have stumbled into a rarity such as a car like this with red interior and matching red top. A factory issued red GT stripe would just be an added bonus. PS. I also have a red GT stripe kit that came with the purchase. The car came minus the engine, and I plan to install my old heavily modded 302 in it. At that point I will then have polished aluminum and bright red color flowing from under the hood as well. Should be a real rare and highly coordinated color combo that attracts a lot of attention. Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks for reading.
Welcome to the board. Wow....this is an old thread. But, at least you kept it on topic. I am sure we would love to see some pictures of this unusual car.
A red vinyl top would be interesting, I'd like to see the Marti Report, I didn't know red was offered.
