Local pull-a-part, got mine off of a 3.8 lincoln continental.
Tip: take a set of torx bits with you to take the brushes out so you can
see if the armature is bad. my first one had the copper wore through
so I now take them apart after taking it out of the car.

Robert is correct, most later Ford applications with the 3.8 engines have the correct alternator for our applications. other Ford models with 4.6's and so on had 3G alternators as well but the mounting holes are in the wrong location.

Jimmy, 130 amp is probably the highest you'll find in a junk yard that came stock on anything to the best of my knowledge

    Ken,

you can always check ebay for a good used one as well :) might save a couple dollars in the long run... just look for the 3.8 applications

To me, it seems there's a time when wire gauge needs to be looked at. I'm no EE but going from ~50 amps to 200 amps seems, to me, to be a major change.
3.8 liter parts swap is interesting to me. That gives me another avenue of parts.
    Thanks for your help.

yeah, to me the 200 amp is a bit of overkill. i am running the 3G 130 setup on my current '71 and plan to on my near future Grabber which will be EFI, electric fan, small sound system and a couple other electronics nic nacs and i feel confident using it.

i know the 3G in my '71 is impressive as far as engine running and light illumination goes, and it keeps the battery at peak performance :thumbs2: hope this info helps

my wife's 2000 explorer has a 3G 130 on it (different mounting locations of course) and it's fully loaded (power windows, locks, moonroof, lighted running boards, lighted/heated mirrors, fog lights, etc....) but i'd check into it anyway. that would be kinda cool, just to keep in mind if nothing else :tiphat::Handshake
