Got this cheap on eBay .. nobody else was interested I guess. It's an 11x14 binder basically documenting the proper assembly of 1971 Mavericks and Comets - it's about 100 pages or so ... The first paragraph of the manual reads:

    ***************************************************
    FORWARD

The purpose of this manual is to present to automotive assembly division, manufacturing divisions, quality control and other interested departments, a consolidated form of detailed instructions and information pertaining to the fabrication of a production vehicle.
    ***************************************************

Picture number 1 below is the cover. The most interesting page in the book details the proper painting of the engine compartment. The revision date is 7-6-70 and it supersedes revision date 1-12-70. Keep in mind this manual is for 1971 Mavericks and Comets. The text on the right side of the page indicates that boths sides of the front and rear fender aprons, both sides of the radiator support, both sides of the the suspension housing and the front of the firewall are to be painted with black paint. It also states that body color overspray is permissable in the cross-hatched area "A" only if it is covered with sound deadener, black paint or not visible from the fender well opening.

This has always been an interesting topic .. most 1970 Mavericks had black engine compartments ... but later years were typically body color ... perhaps only the very early 1971 cars were black until Ford sent out another revision of this document to the assembly line indicating to make it body color.

What is the build date of your car?

My 71 Grabber had body color engine compartment with a build date of January 11, 1971 ....

Cool stuff. You should be a detective...or make your own internet search engine...you always find the answers to every obsure thing, especially Maverick related.:) Good job. By the way, my 71 Grabber and 72 LDO have body painted engine compartments.

By any chance does it give chassis dimensions? I've always wanted to know exactly how far apart the shock towers should be on my 70.

No chassis dimensions ... I do see frame charts on eBay all the time ... I assume they would have front end dimensions in there ... Actually ... I think the shop manuals have all the dimensions in them as well ...
