As some of you know I am working on a Rack and pinion swap. After eliminating 3 racks as follows Manual rack From 2003 Saturn Ion( It was to long and honestly had a poor gear ratio 4.5 turns)) It did have the easiest Mounting capabilites. I feel this could still work with more effort than I am willing to go through. Dodge Omni (rack Didn't center well) and well it came from dodge Toyota Pick up manual rack early 90's (poor angle on the steering coupler) It has come down to the tempo Rack. The inner rod ends can be cut and rethreaded the easiest. Has all the right angles but I dont like the mounting configuration. Makes for a much harder centerline to be attained for proper geometry. This saga to be continued.......
Lance, check out some of the GM front wheel drive, 80's models. They have center steer, makes for alot less chance of bumpsteer problems.
bumpsteer is caused by the angles from the rack to the tie rod ends on the vertical plane. as the car rises and falls the distance from the rack to the tires changes and causes dangerous issues of toe in/out. bottom line is have the rack in line with the tie rod as close as possible. those that lower their cars excessively will notice this as the rod ends are pointed upward badly.
Sorry to bring this back up, but ever think about a ranger/bseries manual rack, 93-...? That's what I'm thinking about, but haven't done any camparing yet
Look at Nissan 200SX racks as well. They're rear steer, 2.5 turns lock to lock, power, and fairly easy to mount. I used one when I converted my 64 Falcon to R&P. So far so good
