Hey guys, can someone tell me how to proceed with removing the u jounts on my 74 Comet, it has clips holding the U joints together. Do I just drop the rear u joint or do I need to drop the front, or both? It looks like I need a needle nose to squeeze the clips, do the caps just fall out when those clips are removed, I need to know what to expect, I don't want to lose my needle bearings.

I am installing a new flex plate and of course, dropping the drive shaft is one of the first things I have to do.

I did U joints in a Pinto Wagon back in ,84 but they were held together with U bolts.

Halebop; remove the little U clips on the rear joint, and slide the driveshaft out of the trans. There are two of them. That is all you need to do to remove the shaft. Leave the ujoints in place.

Just remove the 4 1/2 nuts on the rear u-bolt holding the rear u-joint on. Drop the rear of the drive shaft and pull it out of the tranny. You don't need to remove any u-joints from the driveshaft ...

It is a good idea to wrap tape around the the u-joint to keep the caps from falling off while it is out of the car.

make sure you put something under the output where the driveshaft goes into in the tranny.....the fluid will get everywhere (assuming it is an automatic tranny)

Thanks for this info guys, but I'm a little confused, I saw no U bolts, just clips , I looked at the back ones, and there are 4 clips 2 on the drive shaft, yolk, and 2 on the yolk going into the rear end, Maybe I am not looking close enough, does the mounting of the U joints vary? Thanks for the tips

Oh by the way.. I hated pintos too, until I owned my 1990 wagon, it went through Ice and Snow like it was nothing, I was very surpised, incidentally, common misconception,
the majority of the pinto car line's existence , they did not, have issues with exploding gas tanks
once they went to 5 mile per hour bumpers.. problem solved.
