    FYI

I will be fabbing up a manual rack and pinion for the "BADMAV" I will document the procedure and make templates if anybody is interested. I would assume that a power rack of the same variety would also work. I will be using a mustang II/Granada manual rack. I will be adding tubular a arms and coil overs as well. I am not interested in cutting it up for a MII front end. I like the stock appearing car with mild mods. Tryinbg to accomplish more of a Trans Am style Mav, hence the side exit exhaust etc........ Just my thing.....

I am very interested in the modifications required to put a rack and pinion steering setup in a Mav without removing the shock towers. Seems to me alot less risky, but you get the benefits of the more responsive rack and pinion steeing. Go for it!! :)

Give us details, when you have them. I have access to new Rack and Pinion and have been attempting to decide if it is worth the effort.

I"m assuming this will be a custom, rear steer rack?? I'm also very interested in this modification......

I have tried contacting Flamming River about their rack kit for Mustangs and how much it would take to make it work on our cars. I even told them we could deliver a car to them for measurements. They would never answer me or return my calls. Maybe someone who lives near them could get better responses if you go by in person. I am interested in a rear steer rack only. I'm half tempted to buy a Mustang set up and see whats up.

Robert Raney has done it, and I have seen it. Nice job and I am going to do my 71 following his lead. I am going to go with BIG brakes and stuff. I think from this thread that there is enough interest in this mod that a guy could make some decent extra $ from it.

I would just buy the Rod & Custom Motorsports set up if I was gonna go with the Mustang II set up. It sure would simplify things. The rear steer kit for Mustangs is only about $1200 and that includes the steering column. Anyone know the deminsions of the Mustang width compared to our cars?

The mustang II unit will not work on our cars without removing the shock towers. The rear steer units are limited by width, hard to get the pinion in a spot where you can keep a reasonable turning radius. I've discussed it with Flamin River and they said that it would take a custom, rear steer rack.

    I aint skeered!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

I will make one trust me.........Not the first R and P job. I have a welder/plasma cutter/ access to unlimted rack and pinions. One thing with big companies is that the need has to be greater than the cost to start a new project. lets face it mavericks just are not popular enough for a large scale project as this. They blew you off for this reason. Worse case scenario i have to go with power steering but i would prefer manual rack. :smash:

So is your plan to make a rear steer rack? All Must II have front steer. If the tire tracking width is the same on the Mustang as it is the Maverick, then its just a matter of making brackets. Especially since they use the same upper and lower control arms.

The normal Mustang (not MII) rack is wider than the Mav's. Here is a discussion and pics of a rack installed in a Mav by Total Control Products. They had to narrow it by about 2 inches, but they lost rack travel that way and the turning radius suffered....
