I have a 1974 maverick and I am going to put a 302 from a mercury 1988 gran marquis. The head is fuel injected and I am using a carb setup. Do I need to get new heads and will I have any problems putting this engine in.

    Thanks
    Zap

keep in mind, that this engine will do wonders for your gas milage, but...The 88 mercury 302 engine is not the same as the 88 mustang 302 engine. the stang engine is the High output version of the 302. If you are going to go through all the trouble of modernizing the maverick, I would suggest getting the intake and heads from the HO stang and putting it on your block. Let me know how it goes, putting in a fuel injected late motor is something I have wanted to do for some time.

    engine swap

The 88 is most likely a roller motor. If so, the balance is different 28 oz vs 50 oz. Be sure you get the flexplate and it should bolt to your torque convertor. I'm not as familiar w/ AT's. as I've only done std trans swaps. PITA!! You will also need to use the older timing cover and put a concentric on the end of the cam for the fuel pump. The 88 didn't have the hole or the cam for the pump arm. You'll also need the from harmonic balancer, as it too, is different. Now the belts-- If you use the serpentine one, use everything from the 88. if you go V-belt, you'll need the adapter pulleys from Motorsport or similar, as they fit differently and won't line up with the old ones. If you use the 88 accessories, you'll need an adapter for the P/S pump, if you have P/S. If not, no problem. Be sure to throw away the smog pump! If you need the P/S adapter, I have them for $25. They fit between the metric pump and the SAE hose to your control valve. After all my work, the 302 tool a dump, so it's getting a 289. BTW- it's a 64 1/2 mustang conv., but 289/302 are all the same!

You will be pestered to death with all the little things needed for belts ,pullies etc so make a decision on what belt system you want. For fuel you can als go with an electric fuel pump system. The engine balance is different so don't mix crank parts.
I have fuel injection on my 73-302 and kept all the original belts. Only had to deal with the fuel injection install.

one big thing they havent told u is that if u use the v belt system u have to change the water pump to the older style... they rotate different directions and u will end up with cooling probs

You do not have to change the heads to run a carb/intake on the EFI engine.

If I remember correctly, you can use the Crown Vic water pump- They run the right direction for an older set-up.

It was a LONG time ago, but these problems keep popping up! I had to alter the radiator with the pump going the wrong way and THEN found out about the Crown Vic pumps. They fit the 302 and go the right way for an early mustang with no alterations needed.

That is not the case with the 80's Panther cars.
