Well today i went to the fabric store with my mom and sisters, saw a 4 door mav with a snorkle(but it was really slow).Anyways i was looking at their vinyl material and it was really nice and 6.99 a yard. Also i saw the headliner material that ford used in the late 80's but this material was thicker, but not cheap 10.99/yard but i like it better than the vinyl headliners so thats what i'm going to be using.I just spent 2 hours reading old posts and found out you have to remove the windows to install the headliner. But my front one is broken and my rear has a leak so not too bad.Now my questions are how many yards of material will i need to do the headliner? and how much vinyl material do i need to do the buckets, rear seat and the visors? i'm going to do this by myself...my mom has alot of sewing equipment even the leather H/D kind.
One thing I would look into is UV Treated Fabric. Even though the headliner is rarely seen my direct sunlight, the effects of the sun's UV Rays would be devastating on a nicely sewn and installed headliner. Note: You will need to sew the sunvisors with new vinyl as well, and these thing will DEFINITELY NEED UV TREATING!
did the headliner material you saw have the foam backing on it? if it was that material is designed to be mounted on cardboard like material.then kinda pressed in place. not sure how it will work in the maverick.
hmm never tought of that, but money is real tight right now yeah it did, i'm gonna figure out some way of using it w/o the rods
The only way you can use it without the rods is if you have a board to glue it to and they don't make one. If you think you're going to save money by using this stuff, think again. You need to spend $50 for a correct headliner which uses the rods, is already sewn, and ready to be installed. The glass does need to come out and it's a pain in the butt to install and get all the wrinkles out. If you've never done this before, get some professional help. I have installed several of them over the years and it's still a pain in the butt. Good luck with it whichever way you decide to go.
I wish we lived closer, I'd ask you for a hand with mine. I thought of doing the glue type myself but... I'd probobly just spend too much time and money on something that would come down on me on a humid day. Besides, replacing them old seals is a good idea anyway.
I have seen pics of Mavericks with the board style headliner custom installed. I am not trying to contradict Ray and say it's easy, but it can be done. I was considering using some thin board material for making some interior panels and such, that might serve the same purpose on the headliner... Dave
Oh, I agree, it can definitely be done. They do it in Street Rods every day. I was just going by the cost factor here. He was trying to save money. A pre-sewn headliner is only like $49.95.
That's just it...there is nothing to glue it to. The headliner is suspended by the rods about 1-2 inches below the roof and there is a layer of insulation glued to the roof. The cars with glued in headliners have a large fiberboard or cardboard liner that is molded to fit underneath the roof to glue the material to. There is not one made for our Mavericks. I wish there were...would make things mighty easy. I think it would cost more than a regular headliner just to make the board.
My fingers are curled up from trying to streatch a sheet of metal I had, I'll get back on it, soon as they get feeling back. . In the mean time... going to have to use a sewn one I can purchase, what's that link razorsharp? Also, who has the better price and/or best fitting window seals?
