According to the Mustang II Haynes manual (closest thing I have to the Maverick), each long line on the damper correspond to 10 degrees , and each short line is 2 degrees.

Is this true for the Maverick with stock V8 damper?

Mine have no numbers on them, exept what I write on them with liquid paper. If mine are right, I am all out with around 40 degrees advance. This might be the bulk of my problem(s).

yes, the longer lines are 10 and the smaller ones in between are 2 each. according to the book. if the ignition is set too far advanced it will cause engine ping, which resembles marbles being dropped into an empty can. hope this helps you.

My marks have TD for "top dead" then 10, 20, 30, and finally a TC (I think it is a TC). Is this where I should be running full out, at the TC? It looks to be around 38 or 40 degrees before TDC.

Well, I guess since the car is out of commission for 24 hours, I may as well mess with that timing, verify it is all correct. Hope so, since I installed the cam to match the timing. It was all straight back then. Maybe two years ago.

I have 24 hours before the RTV on the intake cures, trying to fix another problem...

correct timing depends on your combo. on my son's mav, i just advanced it until i had a hot start slow crank (without vac adv), then retarded it until slo hot crank was gone. then went to the track & played with the timing to find timing with best et without start problem. i think its about 43 deg right now.
