Well I went and pulled the 200/C4 out of Tim's (mtrhed) '71 Grabber yesterday. I brought it up to NC this morning and set it down in my '69.5. It's now up and running, runs awesome. I'll make another post with pics and more info about the drivetrain later, it's pretty cool. The problem is the car won't start by the ignition switch in the car. You turn the key on, the radio and everything comes on, but when you turn it to start, nothing. You can take a screw driver and trip the starter solenoid and it will fire right up, and when you turn the key off in the car, it shuts the engine off, so that's working. But it will not turn over when you turn it to start. Anyone have any ideas? Keep in mind this is a '69.5 with the switch on the package tray, so the normal switch on the column stuff dosen't apply.
Neutral safty switch? I don't know about the early ones but my 76 has a 4 wire plug right at the firewall near the motor side of the master cyl. 2 of those are for the neutral start switch.(other 2 for reverse lamps) I always knocked that plug apart when I was changing engines.
That's my guess. I'd also eliminate the solenoid itself. It's easy enough to swap out with one of the MANY that you have on hand. Good luck.
I agree. Sounds like the neutral safety switch, I think you know where that is located. When my safety switch went bad I was able to start the car by "jumping" the solenoid as well.
1. Try to wiggle the shifter as you hold the switch in cranking mode(apply the brake). 2. Test light at the two locations. Solenoid from switch, switch to solenoid (in cranking mode).
It was the neutral safety switch. I didn't even have the linkage and everything for the transmission in the car yet, and the shifter was just kind of hanging down in 2nd or 1st. Thanks!
