170ci 3spd to 5.0 3spd - What's needed? Q's Answered Well, I have spent 1.5 quality hours of homework time searching the topic in question and I learned a lot. I still have some questions and would like verification on some facts, if I could. I'll post the answers up here. Thanks in advance. Q1: I will need a new clutch. I am sure this isn't maverick specific so there's lots of aftermarket/junkyard options. What are yall running? Names and numbers are fine. I don't understand much more than that...yet I will continue research on this topic Q2: Is the 3spd in the car up to the task? I have read that the 3spd are solid but I know transmission are built for different cars...and it is syncromesh? NO, really want to still get a 3spd so Iz accepting donations/offers Q2.5: The flywheel. Do I have to consider the transmission, clutch, or motor when selecting it or some combination? Do I need to consider anything more than knowing its a 5.0 and a 3spd Just the Motor Q3: The bell housing stuff? Toploader bellhousing for SBF. 5.0 bolt pattern same as 302. Anything else i should consider? Q4: If I want to add an overdrive, I can use the column shift(assuming I fix it...) and put a big red button on the dash or something? NO Fact 1: I have to change the clutch linkage. I should pray to Jesus and Sweet Baby Jesus that I can find one and at a reasonable price. YES Fact 2: You can't search things like "t5," "3," and "I6." It is a good excuse just to read the entire transmission forum or "clutch" results. YES For my reading reference: How To Rebuild A Top Loader Four-Speed references: THREAD:3-Speed Manual from I-6 ok with 302? Ok. I think I answered one question the transmission on the 170ci had a different tag(RAN BX or RAN BX1) than the one on a 200ci or 250ci (RAN BW or RAN BW1). Does this mean different transmissions? I think so because the Mav 170 and 200 have different tag # where as the mav 200/250 and stang 200/250 3 spd share tag numbers. reference: http://www.davidkeetoploaders.com/3speedidchart.htm
I have read that they are different from 170 -200 to the 250. I could be wrong tho, I have an automatic so i'm not too keen on this, but do read stuff. I don't know what you mean by big red button but that sounds like your trying to get a 4th gear from an automatic. As far as I know, if you have to clutch to shift, you have to clutch to shift into/out of all gears. No electronics about it.
the button is for OD if I can put an aftermarket overdrive on the transmission. I thought I had heard of those. I may be wrong. I think you're right. I think there is some difference between the 170, 200, and 250 transmission. I am getting closer to finding these answers.
OD is just another gear at the end. I say you can't add an electronic one to a manual trans, but i'm old so there may be one out there. And I also say that 170 and 200 transmissions (bells) are different than 250 and 302. I bet two smilies on that
The bells are different 250 and 302 are the same. I am going to put up for one in the wanted section WITH whatever else I need. I am trying to use the transmission I have...if I can to save some money and I want to keep it with the column shift Every website just leaves me with another question. I will win this. :16suspect
10-4. I am also now pretty certain that the bellhousing for the 3 and 4 speeds is the same. So...I just need to find a toploader bellhousing for a 250 or SBF.
Sure thing. Thanks Gene. there's no rush for me anyway. It's just fun. I have about 30 browser windows open on the subjects and am finding out things little by little. I should probably get to my studies anyway.....
what kind of setup do you use right now? which block? which trans do you have? does the 3-speed have a 4-bolt or a 9-bolt top cover? here's some info on bellhousings an 3-speed transmissions: http://www.phlegm.us/tech/drivetrain/history.html and here some about transmission swaps: http://www.phlegm.us/tech/drivetrain/manualswap.html
I have the stock 170 6 and 3 spd. Don't know about the bolts on the cover I am moving to a '91 5.0. Thanks for the links. I found a I6 site that has exact info in your links. It's almost helpful. The only thing I want to change in my drivetrain is the motor and clutch, if possibly.
The gear ratios in the 200 i6 trans you have will not bee fun behind a V8. You need a top loader bell housing with sbf bolt patern. For a 91 5.0 you will need 157 tooth 50 oz flywheel. V8 clutch linkage or cable setup or hydraulic setup.
10-4 on the fly wheel and clutch (i'm thinking cable...). Is the only difference between 170/200 3.03 and 250/302 3.03 the 2nd gear? no I can just get the wide ratio when rebuilding, right? From 5speeds.com: (assuming a 3 speed is just the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear of the 4 speed) Wide Ratio: 2.78 1st, 1.93 2nd, 1.36 3rd, 1.00 4th, and 2.78 Rev. Close Ratio: 2.32 1st, 1.69 2nd, 1.29 3rd, 1.00 4th, and 2.32 Rev. Gears DifferentWide Ratio Countergear: 30 - 24 - 21 - 15 ; 1st 32T , 2nd 31T, 3rd 25T, Input 23T Close Ratio Countergear: 25 - 21 - 18 - 15; 1st 32T , 2nd 28T, 3rd 25T, Input 23T # of teeth the same except for 2nd
