i have a 1970 maverick and when i bought it there was no gas tank it has no rust but for a spot where the trunk floor back panel meet and only 48k miles and has not been driven since the early 80s. my question is since i cant find a gas tank could i cut out the floor and install a 1973 mustang floor since there cheap and install a repop 1973 mustang gas tank would look factory and neat what do you guys think i like the ide a little better than moving the panels around and installing a drop in mustang tank ?

Converting to an available new tank (whether Mustang or Maverick) would be the best way to go in the long run. I'm not a fan of repaired and coated tanks myself.

I was going to modify my trunk floor for an early Mustang tank, but my trunk floor is pretty nice so I opted for a fuel cell for now. Just in case anyone ever repops the 70 tanks.

Another thought might be to get the trunk floor out of a later Maverick and install it since those tanks are available. I can't remember anyone doing that, but it should work as far as I know.

ya i read them not to bad of an idea but i thought that putting in a mustang floor and tank from a 1973 would look neater and be easier plus i will keep original floor just incase

Neither method will be "easy". It will take some work to get something to work.

There is a tech article discussing Mustang tanks in 71 and up cars. Maybe that will give you a few ideas on how to deal with yours. Good luck.

The one thing I did find out about Mustang tanks in a Maverick from reading here and doing my own measurements is that the width of the Mustang tank is an issue. The factory Maverick tank is narrow and long where the Mustang tank is wider and shorter. When using a Mustang tank, the filler will be slightly off center to the Mavericks filler but that is ok. The issue is exhaust clearance on the passenger side. It's do-able, but tight.

In hind sight, I think changing the trunk floor to a 71 and up style Maverick trunk floor might be easier.

This is a pic from another member who was attempting the Mustang tank swap.

Does anyone have the link to this modification of the Mustang tank? I saw it once but can't find it.
